Happy New Year

Happy New Year everyone. The blog turned 2 years old on December 12 and has been getting bigger and better since. We dedicated ourselves a lot more to it this year than in 2006 and we plan to make it even better in 2008.

Here's a little video from Dan Fogelberg. I wouldn't consider myself a fan, but he was a very underrated singer/songwriter. He died of prostate cancer a couple of weeks ago. This was his most commercially heard song and appropriate for New Year's Eve.

So party hardy, but don't drink and drive, and be safe.

This Week in the NFL - Week 17

We've made it...the final week of the regular NFL season. A couple of playoff spots left to be decided and some history that can be made. Other than that it's nearly impossible to tell what will happen in this week's games. Players are rested, injured ones are shut down, and some have just quit on the season. That being said, here's our picks for Week 17.

Patriots -13.5 at Giants
You're kidding right? The Pats are going to blow the Giants off the field to get their perfect regular season. The Giants could play all their starters for the full 60 minutes and it wouldn't matter. We actually had a chance to go to this game and passed.

Jets -6 vs. Chiefs
Back to back games at the Meadowlands. Too bad they didn't play a doubleheader.

Eagles -7.5 vs. Bills
This is really too big a spread for the Cheesesteaks, but McNabb is hot again and the Bills can't stop the run - translation: big game for Brian Westbrook.

Bucs +2.5 vs. Panthers
Bucs will be sitting regulars, but their defense should still be enough to stop whomever is at QB for the Panthers.

Bengals -2.5 at Dolphins
We wouldn't be at all surprised for the Bungles to show up, but Carson Palmer should be able to pick apart the Fish defense.

Packers -5 at Lions
Packers were humiliated by the Bears last week. Favre won't play the whole game, but its still bad news for the Lions.

Jags +6 at Texans
Sorry, even with the regulars sitting, this team is too good for the Texans.

Seahawks +1 at Falcons
We predict we'll get this one wrong.

Browns -11.5 at 49ers
They may not make the playoffs, but the Browns are going to go out with a bang.

Bears +2 vs. Saints
Our mistrust of the Saints continues.

Cowboys +9 at Redskins
We thinks the Skins will win the game, but even with the 'boys 2nd stringers in it should be close.

Steelers -3 at Ravens
Ravens stink. 'nuff said.

Vikings -3 at Broncos
Vikings blew their playoff chances last week, but slim chances are better than none.

Chargers +8 at Raiders
Meaningless game, but the Bolts want to go to the playoffs on a high note.

Rams +6 at Cardinals
We waivered on this one. No trust in either team.

Colts +5 vs. Titans
Peyton will play long enough to take this one.

The Face of the Victim

Too often the victim is forgotten in criminal cases. Jim Leyritz is not likely to forget the face of Fredia Veitch any time soon. Veitch was the victim yesterday early morning when Leyritz allegedly drove while under the influence and crashed his SUV into Veitch's car.

Fredia Veitch was a waitress at a Ft. Lauderdale area steakhouse, working her last week on the late shift. Her husband was uncomfortable with her late hours due to the propensity of drunk drivers on the road when she would be returning home from work.

Her two children are now without a mother because of an irresponsible act. It's a reminder of the dangers of drunk driving. If you don't care enough about yourself, think about the pain you could be inflicting on someone else's family. Think about what it would be like if it was your family that was affected. And then call a cab.

In This Corner

The "he said, he said" battle between Brian McNamee and Roger Clemens is starting to heat up. Clemens has already stepped up with a video defense and an upcoming interview with 60 Minutes. Now McNamee's lawyers have brought in attorney Richard D. Emery to help defend the personal trainer against accusations of lying to the Mitchell investigation.

McNamee's attorney, Earl Ward, asked Emery to come on board because of his experience with libel and defamation cases, and in case the situation were to arise where McNamee would want to sue Clemens.
“If Roger Clemens continues to play fast and loose with the truth on ‘60 Minutes’ and he continues to call Brian McNamee a liar then we will proceed with a defamation suit,” Emery said in a telephone interview. “It is one of the only avenues Brian has to defend himself against the claims that he lied.”

Breaking News: Leyritz Arrested for DUI, Vehicular Homicide

Former Yankee Jim Leyritz has never been afraid to speak his mind, but it will be interesting what he has to say after his arrest earlier today on charges of DUI and Vehicular Homicide. Leyritz is being held on $11,000 bond after his SUV collided with another vehicle at an intersection in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The vehicle rolled over and the female driver was ejected. She later died at an area hospital. Leyritz was booked on suspicion of DUI after he refused to take a Breathalyzer test.

Leyritz has been making a name for himself as a baseball analyst for mlb.com and has announced minor league games for the YES network.

Source

UPDATE: 3:05 EST: A conviction of vehicular homicide while under the influence of alcohol is a second degree felony in Florida. Leyritz would face a fine of up to $10,000 and up to 15 years in prison. He also would lose his driver's license permanently, though he could apply for reinstatement after five years. Leyritz was apparently out celebrating his 44th birthday on Thursday.

UPDATE: 6:00 EST: Some more details of the crash have surfaced. Leyritz was driving a Ford Expedition when he ran a red light, smashing into the Mitsubishi Montero, driven by Fredia Ann Veitch. The 3o-year old victim leaves behind 2 children.
"Officers on scene observed Leyritz to have red, watery eyes, a flushed face and an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person," Fort Lauderdale police detective Kathy Collins said.
When Leyritz refused the Breathalyzer, police took blood samples and are awaiting the results.

Yankee Fan's Prized Possession Stolen

If any of you have ever collected baseball cards, programs, yearbooks, etc., you know how devastating it is if they are lost, stolen, or in many cases, thrown out by your Mother (no, mine didn't, though she threatened to many times).

Troy Peterson of Henderson, KY is one such Yankees fan. Henderson's home was recently broken into and his baseball collection was taken. It included his prized possession, a 1952 World Series program, similar to the one pictured to the left, given to him by his great-aunt, who attended the games.

Peterson also lost approximately 30,000 baseball cards, some dating back to the 1950s. It was the 2nd such break in, in 3 weeks.

If you have any information, please contact the Henderson police department.

The Daily Yankeeland

What would the Daily Yankeeland be without a Johan Santana report? Joel Sherman of the NY Post says his sources indicate that the Red Sox are still in the lead to land the lefty. The absurdity of this is that it isn't an election. It doesn't matter who trails or leads. Obviously the Twins are not completely happy right now with any offer or they would have pulled the trigger by now. This has clearly turned into a marathon and not a sprint.

The Yankees have told Robinson Cano to stop playing winter ball, ostensibly because they want an injured calf to completely heal. Cano had just begun playing recently for Estrellas de Orientales in the Dominican and was starting post-season play.

Mr. Holier than Thou, Mike Lupica, whom we have as much respect for as say toe fungus, rips Roger Clemens a new one in today's Daily News. The Lip compares Clemens' defense to that of Tour de France cheat, Floyd Landis (does anyone really think Lance Armstrong was clean?).

The NY Times has an interesting piece on Clemens' attorney, Rusty Hardin. Hardin represented Wade Boggs a few years back, when the Hall of Fame 3rd Baseman was accused of assaulting a flight attendant on the Yankees' charter.

Anyone else as creeped out as I am by this new Derek Jeter cologne ad?

Shays Rips Bud a New One

The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform has January 15 marked on its calendar to hold hearings concerning steroid use and abuse. George Mitchell, Donald Fehr, and Bud Selig are expected to attend, but no ball players are expected to be present.

Committee chairman Christopher Shays (R-Conn) feels there is little is to be learned from having players testify at the hearings, but did take the opportunity to take a shot at Selig.
"Part of it is that major league baseball has been incredibly passive on this issue to the point of condoning it," he said. "And so, who do I think is mostly at fault? The commissioner, frankly, for tolerating it and for not having the guts to step up and say we need changes and if you don't agree with me, then find someone else to run this corrupt process."
Stephen Lynch (D-Mass) hopes the hearings will show just how widespread the problem is. Do we really need a house committee to tell us that?

The subcommittee on commerce, trade and consumer protection will also meet in January (on the 23rd) to discuss the impact of performance enhancing drugs.

More waste of your tax dollars.

What to Do, What to Do?

ESPN's Jayson Stark is reporting tonight that the Twins are willing to go into spring training with Johan Santana still a member of the team. The Twins are still not happy with the players being offered, so they figure they have nothing to lose by waiting.

The thing that could change all that of course is if Santana and his agent press the issue by forcing the Twins' hand.

LaTroy Makes it Official

LaTroy Hawkins has officially signed his contract, one that will guarantee him $3.75 million next season. Now if we could only guarantee he won't stink.

Here's the official news release:
The New York Yankees made it official Thursday, signing veteran reliever LaTroy Hawkins to a one-year deal.

According to Rocky Mountain News, Hawkins will make $3.75 million next season.

The 35-year-old Hawkins went 2-5 with a 3.42 earned run average with five saves in 62 appearances with the NL Champion Colorado Rockies last year.

Over 13 seasons in the majors, he has posted a 56-76 record with 75 saves and a 4.68 ERA in 631 games, which has included 98 starts. He played his first nine seasons in Minnesota and has also had stints with the Cubs, Giants and Orioles.

Winter League Roundup

We now bring you up to date on how the Yankees' players and prospects are doing south of the border.

Dominican

Wilson Betemit (Leones del Escogido)
Hasn't played since we checked in last. Sitting at .286-2-7

Jose Veras (Leones del Escogido)
Has thrown just 1 inning since our last update, but has still not allowed a run (8.2 IP). He's also got 13 Ks.

Edwar Ramirez (
Tigres del Licey)
Still has not appeared in any games since his initial 3.

Robinson Cano (
Estrellas de Oriente)
The Cano Kid is a recent addition to the Estrellas team. He's ripping away at .350 (14-40) with 3 doubles and 3 RBI.

Mexico

Tim Lavigne (
Algodoneros de Guasave)
Lowered his ERA from 2.22 to 1.88 in 28.2 innings, and picked up his 8th save.

Venezuela

Justin Pope
(
Bravos de Margarita)
Has not appeared since our last update. Has allowed just 2 earned runs in 23.1 innings pitched. His 0.94 WHIP and 0.77 ERA, in 22 appearances, are among the league's best.

Alberto Gonzalez (
Bravos de Margarita)
Has been on a tear, raising his average from .304 to .347. Of his 41 hits, 12 are for extra bases.

Francisco Cervelli (
Cardenales de Lara)
Has gone 3-11 to raise his average to .212. Has also drawn 10 walks.

Edwar Gonzalez (
Cardenales de Lara)
Average has dropped to .238. Has batted just 5 times since our last update.

Scott Patterson
(Cardenales de Lara)
We missed this one earlier. For some reason, MiLB has him listed as property of Seattle for some reason. Has a 2-2 record with 2 saves and a 1.69 ERA in 21.1 IP. Patterson has walked just 2 while striking out 17.

Marcos M. Vechionacci (Navegantes del Magallanes)
Hitting .270 with 12 RBI (just 1 since last update). 9 of his 27 hits are for extra bases.

What's really remarkable about the winter leagues are the players that were once in MLB and now still play in the South or Central America in the winter. Guys like Luis Polonia and Fernando Valenzuela. And in Venezuela, on Aguilas de Zulia, you'll find Bill Pulsipher and Rich Garces.

Bobby Abreu
(Leones del Caracas)
Has made just one appearance and was 0-3. No idea whether or not he'll play any more.

Time to Finish the Rice

It's easy to talk about players on your own team when it comes to Hall of Fame consideration, but it means a lot more when you feel a player from another team deserves merit. And as much as Goose Gossage can go on talking about being slighted, no one has been more slighted than the Red Sox' Jim Rice.

For those of you too young to remember the career of the Red Sox' left fielder/DH, he was every bit as intimidating as Manny Ramirez or Big Papi. Maybe even more so than the two combined. The look of determination and concentration in Rice's eyes when he stepped to the plate was unmatched. He would unleash his compact swing like a bolt of lightning and more often than not, the ball would disappear over Fenway's green monster or clang off it's body.

In 16 seasons in Boston, Rice compiled a .298 average with 382 HRs and 1,451 RBI. He topped the 100 RBI mark 8 times, and fell 3 short of a 9th season in triple digits. He hit 39 home runs, a remarkable 3 times, and won the MVP award in 1978 when he put up these gaudy numbers- 46 HRs, 139 RBI, 406 total bases, a .907 OPS, and a .315 average.

Unfortunately for Rice, the Red Sox, for the most part, stunk during his career. He missed the '75 post-season, and made it just twice- the infamous '86 team and an '88 team that lost in the ALCS to Oakland. Rice hit just .159 in the playoffs and though he hit .333 in his only World Series, he failed to drive in a run.

Rice worked hard on his defense and was an adequate left-fielder. His surly attitude with reporters has probably cost him more than anything with H of F voters. Some may say his numbers are below more standard credentials - 400 HRS, 1,500 RBI - but he was dominant in his career, and that span lasted more than a decade.

It's time to do what's right, and put Rice in the hall.

The Daily Yankeeland

MLB.com has a piece on Don Mattingly's Hall of Fame credentials, or lack thereof. The most common argument by Mattingly for the hall supporters, is the inclusion of Kirby Puckett in Cooperstown. But as is always pointed out, Puckett had 2 WS rings. Unfortunately, we have to agree with those who don't feel Donnie Baseball should be in the hall. There was none better for a 6-year stretch, but a bad back ruined what would have been a sure hall career.

Another former Yankee is running out of time to get into the hall in the conventional manner. Tommy John, who won 288 games in his career, is in his 14th year of eligibility. That means if he doesn't get voted in this year or next, he gets kicked over to the veterans committee. We are on the fence on this one. It seems that players sometimes get punished for longevity. "He won 288, but look how many years it took him". But the fact that he was able to pitch at a high level for that many years is what might be his best argument for enshrinement.

Welcome to LA, Joe Torre. The Yankees ex-skip never encountered this in NY. A float in the Rose Bowl Parade. The Dodgers will have a 35-ft float in this year's parade, and its being put together, in part, by Dodger players and their families.

Bob Raissman, who makes a living by ripping people, takes aim at the YES network and David Justice. It's a lot more fun when he's ripping Mike and the Mad Dog, or Sterling and Waldman.

MSNBC takes a look at the endorsement hit Roger Clemens is expected to take.

Believe it or Not

The Minneapolis Star Tribune's La Velle E. Neal III (now that's a name) believes that Kei Igawa's name has been mentioned as part of talks surrounding Johan Santana. Take that for what it's worth.

The Twins checked in with the Yankees, Red Sox, and Mets prior to breaking for the holidays.
"There’s a belief that he [Igawa] needs to get out of New York to establish himself. And, of course, Twins pitching coach Rick Anderson isn’t afraid of such a project. It’s still believed that Phillip Hughes and Melky Cabrera would lead any package from the Yankees."
The beat goes on.

Joba Ready From the Start

The Bergen Records' Pete Caldera spoke by Joba Chamberlain about the phenom's transition back to the starting rotation. As you would expect, Joba's feet are firmly planted in reality.

As a starter, "I'm not going to be able to throw 15, 16 scoreless innings, and do what I did" as a reliever, Chamberlain said in a recent telephone conversation. "But I'm going to do whatever it takes to keep my team in the game and go deep in my starts.

"There's going to be times when I get hit around. But you understand that that's a part of it."

This off-season, Joba plans to work on strengthening his legs, mostly by running, and his core. It's hard to tell who will be more excited about this upcoming season, Joba, or Yankees' fans, who get worked up every time the righty enters the game.

Clemens' Investigating, Meeting with Reporters

Roger Clemens' team of attorneys has started its own investigation (hopefully this is more than OJ looking for the real killers) into ties to steroid use by their client, and the Rocket will meet with reporters on January 6, the same night his 60 Minutes interview will air.

Attorney Rusty Hardin said "the investigation of the allegations had found several individuals had not spoken with Mitchell’s investigators, but who were around Clemens during the time in which he is alleged to have been using illegal performance-enhancing drugs".
“We are convinced the conclusions in Mitchell’s report are wrong and are investigating the findings ourselves,” Hardin said in a telephone interview. “At this stage we have uncovered a lot of logical people who we thought Mitchell was going to talk to but never talked to him or his investigators. That’s troubling.”
Clemens' interview with Mike Wallace will take place in his home in Katy, Texas (looking for home court advantage?).

When asked if Clemens would admit that he was injected by McNamee but did not believe at the time it was steroids or human growth hormone, Hardin said Clemens would answer that question if asked by Wallace or reporters.

“The answer to that question and others will be resolved by Roger when he talks,” Hardin said. “He’ll be more than glad to answer those questions to Wallace and others.”

This is so far from being over.

Step up to the Mike

Mike Wallace spoke with the NY Times about his upcoming interview with Roger Clemens. Wallace and 60 Minutes first profiled Clemens back in 2001, and Wallace and the Rocket have become friends since. Wallace has been friends with George Steinbrenner for years, but the 89-year old "correspondent emeritus" will have no problem giving a fair and balanced report.

Clemens' reps reached out to 60 Minutes to do the piece in attempt to continue to do damage control in the wake of the Mitchell Report.
“When we went down there to profile him, we went to his home, I watched him exercise, I watched him work out and he became my friend,” Wallace said. “He trusts me and is going to talk to me and I hope he can answer all the questions on my mind.”
Wallace is already working on his line of questions.

“Why would McNamee say these things he said?” said Wallace, a point that has been asked by others because McNamee was compelled to meet with Mitchell’s investigators by federal prosecutors and could be in legal jeopardy if found to be lying.

“Mitchell is thorough, fair and careful,” Wallace added, “so you have to take that into consideration as well when you are thinking about questions to put to Roger.”

The report will air on CBS, Sunday, January 6.

The Luxury of Losing

The Yankees lost the division series for the 3rd straight year, but that didn't stop them from having to cough up $23.88 million in luxury tax. The bill is almost $3 million less than last season, and nearly $10 million less than 2005.

The only other team with a tab was the Red Sox, who gladly traded $6.06 million for a title. Source

The Daily Yankeeland

It's Monday right? With holidays and weekends interspersed, it's hard to keep track of what day it is. As we previously said with the MLB offices closed until after the new year. There have been a few minor transaction. So Taguchi reached terms with the Phillies. Cliff Politte did the same with the Cardinals. And for some reason David Ortiz doesn't think the Red Sox will get Johan Santana- whatever that's worth. Theo pays you to hit Papi, not think.

Ron Guidry is waiting for a job offer, and even a call by the Yankees to be in spring training. So far he's heard nothing. Not the way to treat a guy who has always brought class to the organization and epitomized what it meant to wear the pinstripes.

We showed you Roger Clemens' video yesterday and mentioned his upcoming 60 Minutes Piece. The Daily News' John Harper thinks it's all going to be a disastrous PR onslaught.

Time to take a look at what's going on in some other Yankee blogs. Peter Abraham, always witty, has a spoof of "'Twas the Night Before Christmas".

Tommy Byrne, Gone at 87

Former Yankees' pitcher Tommy Byrne died at his home in Wake Forest, N.C. on Thursday. Byrne, 87, suffered from congestive heart failure. The comeback player of the year in 1955, Byrne was a Yankee from 19431-1951 and again from 1954-1957. In between he played for the St. Louis Browns, Chicago White Sox and Washington Senators.

Byrne had an 85-69, 4.11 career record with 12 shutouts. His best winning season was when he went 16-5 in 1955, with a 3.11 ERA. But Byrne was plagued by control trouble, leading the league in walks three times, and hit batters, 5 straight seasons. He was 1-1 in 4 World Series, all with the Yankees (1949, 1955, 1956, 1957).

Byrne is survived by 3 sons, 1 daughter, and 10 grand-children. His wife, Mary Sue, predeceased him in 2002.

Happy Holidays from My Pinstripes. Today's the shortest day of the year and there probably won't be much MLB activity, now thru Jan 2nd. The MLB offices will be closed during that period.

Josh Hamilton was a nice pick up for the Rangers, but not at the price. 2 pitching prospects? When will the Rangers front office ever learn? Now there looking at signing Eddie Guardado, who is 37-yrs old with an arm going on 500.

GM Andy MacPhail hasn't heard any offers for Erik Bedard that are to his liking, so the most likely scenario is Bedard still being an Oriole on opening day.

Despite steroid use, the Cubs are still pursuing O's 2nd Baseman, Brian Roberts.

Luiz Vizcaino finally got his deal from the Rockies, a 2-year contract worth $7.5 million.

Rangers Acquire Josh Hamilton

The Rangers have picked up outfielder Josh Hamilton from the Reds in exchange for pitchers Edinson Volquez and Danny Herrera.

Hamilton enjoyed a successful comeback season, after many years of disappointment brought on my drug and alcohol addictions. He was taken in the Rule V draft prior to the '07 season and finally showed the promise that made him a 1st round pick in 1999. Hamilton hit .292-19-47 in just 90 games.

Volquez was 14-6 with 166 strikeouts at 3 minor league levels. The left-handed throwing Herrera struck out 64 in 52 1/3 innings at Double-A.

Tis' the Season

It's the holiday season and the Yankees are giving back to the community. Mariano Rivera, Bobby Abreu, Joba Chamberlain, and Derek Jeter have all been involved in recent charitable activities.

Joba was bringing smiles to the faces of children yesterday at the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's pediatric unit. The rookie wore a Yankees' blue Santa cap as he talked with the patients and their families, taking pitchers, and signing autographs.
"The opportunities that I had when I was younger were few and far between," Chamberlain said. "I'm blessed to be put in this situation, and I wouldn't be here if it weren't for a lot of people. If I can help one or two people, that makes it all worth it."
Derek Jeter and his Turn 2 Foundation took in a private screening of "The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep," which opens to the public on Christmas day. The kids were treated to a red carpet experience, paparazzi included.
"It's one of the things that I really look forward to," Jeter said. "When I started the foundation, we never thought it would be as big as it is now. We just left Michigan and we have a lot of things going down in Florida. It's a lot bigger and better than I ever imagined."
Mariano Rivera and Bobby Abreu were guests at Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, where a group of top local students selected by the Fundacion Dominicana de Deportes en Nueva York, got to meet the 2 Yankees as well as former big-leauger, Roberto Alomar.

Mariano told the kids to follow their dreams, and he and Abreu handed out to toys to the kids.
"I love it, because it's great to give back," Rivera said. "I don't believe in just taking."
"To spend time with the kids is what it's all about, and what we really wanted," Abreu said. "We're just looking to get a little smile for those kids. They did a really good job in school, so they get a present."

Clemens Clean...in '06

Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte came clean in one instance. Though they were named in a 2006 LA Times article, as being included in Jason Grimsley's affidavit, both Clemens and Pettitte were not included in the affidavit, which was made public yesterday. Brian Roberts and Jay Gibbons, also both in the Mitchell Report, were also erroneously mentioned by the paper. The newspaper is to run a retraction and apology in today's edition.

Sammy Sosa, Pete Incaviglia, Geronimo Berroa, and Allen Watson were not named in the Mitchell Report, but were included in Grimsley's tale of cheat.

In the case of Sosa, Miguel Tejada, and Rafael Palmeiro, their mention came from a conversation they had with Grimsley while all were with the Orioles in 2005. The four wondered how they were going to play the next season with the banning of amphetamines.

The affidavit also listed José Canseco, Lenny Dykstra, Glenallen Hill, and David Segui, all of whom were in the Mitchell Report.

Friday Hot Stove

One more day until it's officially Winter, but here is the latest from the hot stove.

Buster Olney says that the Padres are the front-runners to land Mark Prior. As we mentioned yesterday, Prior is from the San Diego area.

Now that the Tigers have signed Dontrelle Willis to an extension, GM Dave Dombrowski would like to do the same for slugger Miguel Cabrera.

Carlos Silva's 4-year deal with the Mariners turned out to be for $12 mill per year. What are these people thinking? If Silva is getting that, shouldn't Santana get at least double?

We all remember the controversy back in '04 when Doug Mientkiewicz refused to give up the baseball from the World Series' final out. This year, the Red Sox' Jason Varitek had the ball. Then said he gave it to Jon Papelbon, who didn't know where the ball was (perhaps they're passing it around like the Stanley Cup). Now word comes from Papelbon that his dog at the ball.

Cubbies fans are not happy with the possibility of Wrigley Field's naming rights being sold. Technically, you are already a gum.

According to the Seattle Times, the Mariners and Reds are the front-runners to land the O's Erik Bedard.

The Rockies have signed Kip Wells and Mark Redman to shore up their pitching staff.

This Week in the NFL - week 16

Wow, just 2 weeks to go in the NFL regular season. Hard to believe. It also means less than 2 months until spring training! Here's this week's picks.

Thursday

Steelers -7.5
at Rams
The inconsistent Steelers should be able to cruise in this one.

Saturday

Cowbys -10.5
at Panthers
Unlike the debacle that was the Seahawks-Panthers game, the Cowboys will bounce back from last week's loss in a big way.

Sunday

Giants -3
at Bills
Are we concerned? Damn straight!

Browns -3 at Bengals
Big upsets have occurred in this series, but not this week.

Packers -8.5 at Bears
No reason to have any confidence in da Bears right now.

Colts -7 vs Texans
Texans have been as unpredictable as the Colts have been injured.

Chiefs +5 at Lions
Maybe because we just needed to take an underdog.

Jaguars -13 vs. Raiders
We hate the big point spreads, but the Jags are hot.

Eagles +3 vs. Saints
Okay, so we took another dog. And both these times have been tremendous dogs this year, if you know what we mean.

Cardinals -10 vs. Falcons
Even the Cardinals can't blow this one. Right?

Bucs -6.5 vs. 49ers
The Niners can't think they would win 2 straight.

Patriots -22 vs. Dolphins
Back to the agony of defeat.

Seahawks (NL) over Ravens
Questions about the Ravens QB has the line off.

Jets +8.5 at Titans
Jets have been awful, but that's an awfully big spread for the Titans

Vikings -6.5 vs. Redskins
Big WC game

Chargers -8.5 vs. Broncos
Tough one to predict

Whatchu talkin' 'bout Willis?

Earlier reports of the Tigers and Dontrelle Willis making good progress on a contract extension were not just rumors. The recently acquired lefty agreed to a 3-year, $29 million deal, with incentives that could push the value above $30 million in total.

Willis had to have realized his value is not what it once was. And though he could certainly re-establish his value, another bad season would have meant a possibly big hit to his value on the free agent market after the '09 season.

Thursday Hot Stove

The Phillies have dropped out of the running for free agent pitcher Kyle Lohse, but have agreed to terms with free agent outfielder Geoff Jenkins. Jenkins, who spent the first 10 years of his career in Milwaukee, is expecting to get a 2-year, $13 million deal.

As expected, the Mariners and Carlos Silva have agreed to a reported, 4-year, $44 million deal, pending a physical.

Yankees fans can breathe a sigh of relief. 36-year old, 1-year wonder, Ron Mahay has agreed to a 2-year, $8 million deal with the Royals.

The Rockies are looking into free agents Marcus Giles and Todd Walker for their vacant 2nd Base job.

The Padres have inked Jeff DaVanon and Robert Fick to minor league deals.

The Tigers and Dontrelle Willis have made some progress in discussing a long term deal.

Prior, Santana Not on Hank's Xmas List

As Hank Steinbrenner sits down on Christmas to unwrap his packages, it's unlikely they'll be an ace left-hander, or oft-injured star under the tree. Prince Hank told Newsday's Kat O'Brien that there's only an outside chance of Johan Santana becoming a Yankee, and though they have explored it, it's unlikely Mark Prior will be in the Bronx either.
As for Santana, "We've got to do things based on what we think is best. I think myself and [general manager] Brian are going back and forth. I think we're comfortable staying where we are, and I certainly think we'd be comfortable getting Santana, too."
SI's Jon Heyman believes that Santana will become a Yankee if Hank overrules Cashman concerning what player's are to be included. Hank seemed to confirm that with this statement:
"The decision is my decision," Steinbrenner said. "It doesn't matter one way or another what somebody ... you have to take advice, but ultimately, the owner has to make a decision.

Minor League Updates

Found out updates on key players thanks to a link from Peter Abraham. Chad Jennings, who blogs about the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Yankees, spoke with farm director Mark Newman and found out the following:

Juan Miranda will start the season in Triple-A, splitting time at 1B and DH with Eric Duncan. Newman and the Yankees still have high hopes for Duncan, but the rest of us are getting a little concerned about the local boy.

Mark Melancon and J.B. Cox will be ready for spring training after undergoing elbow surgery in 2007. Humberto Sanchez will not be ready, as he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery.

The Yankees are trying to resign Bronson Sardinha to a minor league deal. The Hawaiian born outfielder, who made a big splash this past spring training, was recently removed from the Yankees 40-man roster. The Yankees have also signed infielder Nick Green, who was with the club in 2005, to a minor league deal.

Finally, Newman stated that any open bullpen spots will be a battle royale between every un-slotted pitcher in camp, current minor league starters included.

* * *

Couple of other quick notes - Darrell Rasner signed a minor league deal the other day, and could still win a spot in the Yankees pen as a long man. Meanwhile, he'll be at Scranton, where Dave Miley will return as manager.

Rocketman

The Elton John-Bernie Taupin hit has been played for years in tribute to Roger Clemens' pitching feats. But now as Clemens' legend stands on shaky ground, we give you William Shatner's interpretation from the 1978 Sci-Fi Film Awards. That would be funny enough, but Captain Kirk's ruffled shirt makes it even better.

Perhaps this lyric is fitting - "I'm not the man they think I am at home"

NFL Recap - Week 15

To say Big Blue were a disappointment, would be like me saying I was upset at the 2004 ALCS. The Giants disgraced themselves at home, and though they are still in the driver's seat, they made it more difficult to clinch a wild card spot.

We'd already blown the Thursday night game, so it was probably an omen.

A Prior Engagement

The Yankees have shown interest in Mark Prior, but the Rangers and Astros have been the most aggressive in their pursuit of the free agent right-hander. That according to Ken Rosenthal, who also states that the Padres are Prior's 1st choice.

Prior is from San Diego and the Padres' Petco Park is favorable to pitchers. But with an extension given to Jake Peavy and the recent addition of Jim Edmonds, the Padres don't have a lot in the coffers to spend.

Rosenthal also gives his spin on the Dan Haren deal, the Twins roster count, and other winter happenings.

According to the Philadelphia Daily News, both the Phillies and Mets have made 4-year offers to free agent pitcher Kyle Lohse. 4 years for mediocrity?

The Cardinals have signed much-traveled infielder, D'Angelo Jiminez, to a minor league deal.

The Seattle Times says Carlos Silva is seriously considering the Mariners', 4-year, $44 million offer. What's he waiting for?

What a hot stove update be without something on Johan Santana. The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that the Red Sox are still the front-runners to obtain the ace lefty, but are sticking to their no-Jacoby Ellsbury stance. The only thing holding up that deal should be hesitation about spending the money on a contract extension for Santana, not whether or not to include Ellsbury.

Costanza Never Would Have Done It

George Costanza was lazy, inconsiderate, a liar...but not a tax cheat. Okay so maybe he was never caught. The same can't be said for David Szen. The latter pleaded guilty in federal court to filing a false tax return and failing to report more than $50,000 in tips from players and coaches. Szen was on a leave of absence during the investigation, but was fired today.
"I was wrong, and for that I'm humbly sorry, your honor," Szen told U.S. District Judge Mark Kravitz.
Szen was released on his own recognizance and will be sentenced March 7. He could get up to six months in prison for a felony conviction. He also faces a fine of up to $100 grand and must pay $10,285 in back taxes plus interest and penalties.

Clemens Issues Denial

Roger Clemens fired off a missive today, via Randy Hendricks, at the accusations of steroid use made by his personal trainer, Brian McNamee.
"I want to state clearly and without qualification: I did not take steroids, human growth hormone or any other banned substances at any time in my baseball career or, in fact, my entire life. Those substances represent a dangerous and destructive shortcut that no athlete should ever take."

"I am disappointed that my 25 years in public life have apparently not earned me the benefit of the doubt, but I understand that Senator Mitchell's report has raised many serious questions. I plan to publicly answer all of those questions at the appropriate time in the appropriate way. I only ask that in the meantime people not rush to judgment."

The group will meet today to discuss the matter, but Clemens' name has already been removed from the association's website. Group president Jim Long told Newsday that he will be speaking with Clemens prior to the meeting.

Roberts, Vina Join the Confessional

Baltimore Orioles 2nd Baseman Brian Roberts admitted to a one-time steroid use in 2003, and retired 2nd Baseman, and current ESPN analyst, Fernando Vina confirmed that he used HGH in that same year.

Both players were named in the Mitchell Report released last Thursday. Roberts was remorseful in his statement.
"I would like to address the allegations that were made against me in the Mitchell Report. I will begin by saying that I have worked very hard to develop a good reputation both on and off the field. I have always taken pride in being a man of integrity and values. I know that by being a professional athlete, I am held to a very high standard. I never have and never will take that for granted. However, I am also human and I have made mistakes.

"In 2003, when I took one shot of steroids, I immediately realized that this was not what I stood for or anything that I wanted to continue doing. I never used steroids, human growth hormone or any other performance-enhancing drugs prior to or since that single incident. I can honestly say before God, myself, my family and all of my fans that steroids or any performance-enhancing drugs have never had any effect on what I have worked so hard to accomplish in the game of baseball. I am very sorry and I deeply regret ever making that terrible decision. My only hope and prayer is that the Orioles, my family, friends and fans that have supported me so faithfully will forgive me."

Roberts was included in the report after testimony by his ex-teammate Larry Bigbie, who recently signed a contract to play in Japan.
"I'm not mad at Larry. I don't hate Larry. Larry is one of my good friends," said Roberts, who acknowledged that he spoke yesterday to Orioles owner Peter Angelos about his intentions, but declined to elaborate on the conversation.

"Obviously from the report, what I gathered was Larry was in a situation where he was asked a question and he had to tell the truth. Larry and I must have had a conversation about it at some point and he thought he remembered. I don't resent Larry, I'm not mad at Larry. It boils down to me, not Larry. I have no problems there."
Coincidentally, Roberts has been actively shopped by the Orioles this off-season.

Vina admitted to HGH use in an interview with ESPN's Bob Ley.
"I tried everything rehabbing," he said. "I came to a point that I was desperate..."

Vina said he tried HGH to heal himself, not to build bulk. "For me, it was to try to get back on the field," he said. "That was the bottom line."

"Was it right? No. Obviously, it was wrong ... I'm embarrassed by it," Vina said.

"I never used steroids," he said. "I never bought steroids from him. All I used was HGH."

Does HGH Use Matter?

After seeing his name in the Mitchell Report, catcher Gary Bennett admitted to using HGH in 2003. Today, he signed a 1 year, 850 grand contract to be the back up catcher for the Dodgers. Apparently this is baseball's moving forward process.

And since there is still no definitive urinalysis to discover HGH, who really thinks its usage will come to an end?

The Daily Yankeeland

It was a tough weekend. Had a dream the Yankees traded Mariano Rivera. I said that's it, I'm no longer rooting for them. Shut down My Pinstripes and that was that. And then I woke up. Phew.

Mark Prior's agent John Boggs admitted that both the Yankees and Mets have shown "preliminary interest" in his client. 11 teams have shown some interested to date for the right-hander, who will probably be ready to go in May. Prior had surgery on his right rotator cuff and labrum.
"He's playing catch right now and Dr. Andrews and his physical therapist feel like he's progressing nicely," Boggs said. "Mark is a guy who has no problem working hard. Barring anything unforeseen, he's going to be just fine. If we don't rush him, he could be very successful."

The Yankees are talking to the Twins again about Johan Santana, but their stance has not changed. They still refuse to include 2 top-notch young pitchers in the deal. Source

Nice piece by Kevin Kiernan in yesterday's Post on Joba Chamberlain.

Former Yankee Mike Lamb signed a 2-year deal on Friday to become the Twins new 3rd Baseman.

Chad Curtis gave his reaction to the news that his good friend Andy Pettitte admitted HGH use.

I'm Alex Rodriguez

In what was a clear case of additional damage control, Alex Rodriguez sat down for an interview with 60 Minutes' Katie Couric. The interview, which aired last night, was filmed shortly after the release of the Mitchell Report, and its accompanying circus. Even C-Rod made a brief appearance.

A-Rod took the opportunity to flatly deny the use of any illegal substances, as well as deny ever having seen anyone else using steroids or HGH. There aren't too many people outside of Jose Canseco who think that A-Rod has been cheating.

He also talked about he "stunk" during post-season play and how it was "unacceptable".

Then we got down to the brass tacks of why this interview was granted. A-Rod talked about how shocked and mortified he was, when while watching the World Series, he heard FOX's Ken Rosenthal announce that A-Rod would be opting out of his Yankees' contract. He took the opportunity to again apologize to the Red Sox and Rockies for what occurred.

A-Rod did admit that ultimately he was responsible since it was his agent/attorney that took these actions. However, he also stated that he did not know that the Yankees were interested in retaining him prior to opting out. It's hard to imagine this intelligent person not knowing what was going on in the world around him.

"When I realized things were going haywire, at that point I said, 'Wait a minute, I've got to be accountable for my own life. This is not going the way I wanted it to go.' So I got behind the wheel."

Rodriguez also talked about his strained relationship with Boras, and the lack of communication that is currently taking place between them. He then talked about how he, on the advice of Warren Buffett, approached the Yankees himself to apologize, and to see if they were still interested. And the rest is history.

Some people will come away from this interview thinking A-Rod was sincere. Others will believe it is just more of the too slick PR approach that has created a bad taste in the mouths of his colleagues and baseball fans. We think there were parts of both, but unfortunately more of the latter.

You can view pieces of the interview on the official 60 Minutes website.

The Fallout Continues

While some players continue to deny steroid and HGH use (Roger Clemens), others have come forward, albeit with half-hearted apologies (Andy Pettitte). There are those who have given full disclosure and co-operated (Dan Naulty) with the Mitchell investigation, but they are in the minority. And there are those players like Johnny Damon and Albert Pujols who are furious about their names being mentioned in a premature and false report produced by NBC news.

Steve Politi of the Star-Ledger had an excellent piece in today's paper on Naulty. It's the story of a player who took the easy route to get what he wanted, and has lived with regrets- and physical and mental ailments- ever since (photos to the left are Naulty in '89 and '97).

Naulty was a 6'6" stringbean who used steroids to bulk up and help him to gain entry to major league baseball. Later, he switched to HGH to help the numerous injuries that occurred as a result of too much muscle mass on his frame. Naulty actually received a World Series ring from the 1999 Yankees, though he wasn't much of a contributor. His career was taking a downward spiral at that point. Ironically, he credits a new faith that he gained by participating in Christian-based meetings with several Yankees. The ironic part? Andy Pettitte and Mike Stanton, both named in the Mitchell report, were also part of that group.

Today, Naulty is a pastor and tries to counsel youth to stay away from drugs and alcohol. If only more players would learn from his mistakes. Click here to read more of Naulty's story.

The more you re-read Andy Pettitte's statement, the more you realize his apology rings hollow. It's not even really an apology. "If what I did was an error in judgment on my part, I apologize." Those words don't exactly say, "I'm really sorry for what I did and I was stupid."

We're huge Andy Pettitte fans and have always admired and respected him. Anyone who has ever dealt with him speaks glowingly of him. Joe Torre once said, "If you have a son, you'd want him to be like Andy Pettitte."

Okay, maybe not completely. We are still Pettitte fans and we think it was great that he came forward. But, at the same time, he could have been a little more sincere with his words. Dan Graziano and Peter Abraham sum up our feelings quite nicely.

As for Roger Clemens, now that his buddy Pettitte has come forward it kind of puts him in an awkward position. His reputation is already tainted. He's in the Mitchell Report as a repeated steroid user. And if he did want to come forward, he made it even harder by having his attorney blast the report and defend his honor. Of course, he could just claim that his lawyer spoke on his own without consulting him.

But, how do you remove the taint when you haven't done anything wrong? That's what Johnny Damon is wondering right now. Damon's name appeared in that erroneous NBC report. He considered suing the station, but his agent advised against it.

"I woke up and my brother is telling me there are reporters at my father's house," Damon told The Post. "My dad told them, 'My son isn't a liar, my son doesn't lie.'"

"It sucks. I am wondering if there is any legal course to turn to", Damon said. "I walk around with my shirt off. If I had anything to hide I wouldn't do that. I really don't know what to say. There seems to be some people who don't like me..."

"I asked my agent about legal action, but he said it wasn't worth it. Maybe the president [of NBC] will write me a nice letter."

Damon was one of 41 players listed in the NBC report that were not included in the Mitchell report. Pujols was also on the erroneous list and worried about his family's reaction.
"What concerns me is the affect this has had on my family and that my character and values have now been questioned due to the media's lack of accuracy in their reporting."
MLB wants to pull a Mark McGwire and move forward, but this is all far from being over.
