Nady Leads Big Comeback

You knew if you turned on the Yankees game today, you might not be seeing a good game. After all, Darrell Rasner, except for the last start, has been miserable for that last month and a half. And unfortunately, that came to fruition. Rasner put the Yankees into a 5-0 hole by the 4th inning, but the Yankees rallied, not once, but twice to win a crazy 14-9 ball game in the Bronx.

But the Yankees chipped away against John Lackey, who brought a no-hitter into the ninth inning in his last start. Ivan Rodriguez started it with a solo home run in the fifth inning and Xavier Nady's 2-run double highlighted a three run sixth inning as the Yankees cut the deficit to 5-4.

Meanwhile, Dan Giese gave the Yankees what they needed, someone to keep them in the game. He tossed three shutout innings after replacing Rasner to start the fifth inning. In the seventh, the Yankees came all the way back. Jose Arredendo retired Johnny Damon to start the inning and looked like he had Derek Jeter on a routine fly out to left-center field, but center fielder Gary Matthews Jr. dropped it for a two base error.

Red hot Bobby Abreu followed with a single to left to tie the game at 5 apiece. Alex Rodriguez followed with a single through Chone Figgins and one batter later Nady crushed a 3-run home run into the left field seats for an 8-5 Yankees lead.

A suddenly raucous crowd got even louder when Edwar Ramirez struck out Matthews and Jeff Mathis to start the eighth inning, but then the bottom dropped out again. Ramirez walked Reggie Willits, the fourth time he walked in the game. Figgins continued to torment the Yankees with his bat, by singling to left and Ramirez walked Erik Aybar to load the bases.

Girardi decided to stick with Ramirez instead of going with Damaso Marte to face Mark Teixeira, since the the big first baseman was 5-6 lifetime against the left-hander. The non-move turned out to be a mistake when Teixeira belted a grand slam into the right field seats to put the Angels back on top, 9-8.

But maybe some of the magic from Old-Timer's Day was still around, because the Angels did everything they could to ensure a Yankees victory. Mike Scioscia went to his set up man Scot Shields to start the bottom of the 8th and Ivan Rodriguez immediately greeted him with a single. Aybar mishandled Melky Cabrera's grounder to short to put two on with no one out.

Pinch-runner Justin Christian and Cabrera then pulled off a double steal that worked to perfection when Mathis threw the ball away, allowing Christian to score the tying run. A walk to Johnny Damon put runners on the corners, but Derek Jeter grounder to Aybar at short held Cabrera at third. Jeter was retired for the first out as Damon moved up to second base. After a walk to Abreu loaded the bases, A-Rod hit a tailor made double play ball to Figgins, but the third baseman booted the ball. Cabrera scored the go-ahead run and the bases remained loaded.

Darren Oliver replaced Shields to face Robinson Cano, who come into the game as a defensive replacement for Wilson Betemit. Despite a sore and swollen hand, Cano lashed a single to center field to score Damon and Abreu for a 12-9 Yankees lead. Nady then delivered his 4th hit of the day, to left field for his sixth RBI of the game. The final run came across on a Christian single for a 6-run inning and a 14-9 Yankees lead.

Jose Veras sealed things in the 9th after allowing a 1-out double. Incredibly, the Yankees had themselves a split of the four game series.

News and Notes

Xavier Nady is 10-26 (.385) in Pinstripes thus far, with 3 home runs and 10 RBI.

Mariano Rivera was unavailable due to back spasms.

Bobby Abreu is 12-26 (.462) over the last 6 games.

Yankees Crush Orioles in Finale

The Yankees Yankees took whatever frustrations they have felt the last three days out on the Orioles this afternoon, pounding the Baltimore squad, 13-3. Bobby Abreu had a huge day with a pair of home runs and Alex Rodriguez also went deep to help Joba Chamberlain earn his 4th win of the season.

The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning on an Aubrey Huff single, but it was all Yankees after that. They took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the 1st when Alex Rodriguez's single scored Derek Jeter and Bobby Abreu came home when Nick Markakis' throw sailed over the head of catcher Guillermo Quiroz. A-Rod came across when Quiroz mishandled a Dennis Sarfate pitch for the first of two run scoring passed balls on the day.

Singles by Brian Roberts, Brendan Fahey, and Markakis cut the lead to 3-2 in the third, but Chamberlain rebounded, retiring Huff on a line out and Melvin Mora on a ground out to Robinson Cano.

The Yankees began to break things open in their half of the inning when Johnny Damon drew a lead off walk and two batters later Abreu hit his 12th home run of the year. The Yankees then put things away with a pair of 4-run innings in both the 6th and 7th frames.

Brian Burres was the victim in the 6th when Jason Giambi, Abreu, and Xavier Nady produced run scoring hits. In between the innings, Edwar Ramirez made the fastest exit in recent memory. His first pitch to Kevin Millar sailed over the Yankee killer's head and was immediately tossed out of the game by home plate umpire Mark Wegner.

Though Joe Girardi came out and argued vehemently, Ramirez didn't see upset, as though the pitch "didn't slip". If that's the case it was in retaliation for Daniel Cabrera hitting Alex Rodriguez on Tuesday night. It would be a lot better though if the Yankees pitcher stopped head hunting and drilled some ribs.

Back to baseball, Abreu and A-Rod hit back to back home runs in the bottom of the 7th. For Abreu it was his first two home run game as a member of the Yankees, and 13th of the season. A-Rod's home run, his 23rd, was the 541st of his career.

Yankees Streak to 6 in a Row

There was nothing pretty about the Yankees pitching tonight, whether it be Darrell Rasner or any reliever not named Rivera. But the Yankees hitters are heating up, even on a cool night. They made the difference tonight in an 8-5 win over the San Diego Padres that extended their winning streak to 6 games. It also bumped their "high water mark of the season" to 6 games over .500 (39-33).

The Yankees took a quick 1-0 lead in the 1st inning with the help of a Khalil Greene error and built on it in the 2nd. Robinson Cano and Wilson Betemit stroked back to back doubles off of Jake Peavy for a 2-0 lead and Johnny Damon brought home Betemit two batters later with the first of his three singles on the night.

Rookie Edgar Gonzalez stroked a 2-run double in the 3rd off of Ranser, but he escaped further trouble after walking the bases loaded by retired another rookie, Chase Headley on a deep fly out to Melky Cabrera.

Each time the Padres got close the Yankees answered back. Alex Rodriguez continued his torrid June with a home run in his fourth straight game. His 14th home run of the season gave him 532 for his career, putting him two behind Jimmie Foxx for 14th place on the all-time list.

A-Rod helped manufacture a run in the 5th when Brian Corey replaced Peavy. The reigning MVP singled, stole 2nd base, one of four Yankees steals, and scored on a Jorge Posada single for a 5-2 lead.

Rasner threw 96 pitches in his struggling night, so Joe Girardi went to Edwar Ramirez to start the 6th. He breezed through the inning, but Brian Giles and Adrian Gonzalez took him deep in the 7th and suddenly it was a ball game again at 5-4. But again the Yankees answered right back.

Derek Jeter lead off the Yankees half of the 7th with a double and scored on Bobby Abreu's single. Abreu promptly stole 2nd and A-Rod greeted reliever Cla Meredith with an RBI single to restore the 3 run lead.

The teams traded single runs in the 8th with Kyle Farnsworth giving up Chase Headley's (Chase, Cla, Khalil..who named these people?) first major league home run and RBI . But Damon produced another RBI single for an 8-5 lead. Then it was up to Mariano Rivera to add to his save total. He even gave up a lead off double, but struck out Giles, and got Adrian Gonzalez to bloop into a double play, his brother Edgar being the victim at 2nd base.

News and Notes

Darrell Rasner picked up his 4th win and ended his 4 game losing streak. He deserved a break considering 2 of his losses were due to a lack of run support.

Mariano Rivera is now 19-19 in save situations. He picked up his 19th save last season in August.

Derek Jeter's double extended his hitting streak to 7 games, though it's a rather poor streak (7-29, .241).

Alex Rodriguez's 3-4 night raised his average to .337, tops in the AL. Johnny Damon had 3 hits put in the two spot at .332.

Hideki Matsui sat out tonight's game due to fluid build up in his left knee. Team doctor Stuart Hershon drained the knee and Godzilla will probably also go for an MRI.

Yankees Offense Steps Up

The Yankees lineup slumped in April and the beginning of May, but it has started to come around just in time. The Yankees bats came through when the Yankees arms didn't last night. Consecutive singles by Johnny Damon, Derek Jeter, and Bobby Abreu in the 12th put the Yankees ahead and Mariano Rivera slammed the door shut on a 7-6 win.

Chien-Ming Wang was ineffective and has now gone 5 straight starts without a win. The Twins reached him for single runs in each of the first three innings and added two more in the 6th, one of which scored after Wang left the game.

But the Yankees matched the Twins output, scoring 3 runs in the 1st and 6th innings, and held a 6-5 lead after 6. But in the 7th, Edwar Ramirez gave up his first run of the season, an opposite field home run by Michael Cuddyer to tie the game. Jose Veras, Kyle Farnsworth, and Ross Ohlendorf held the game in check until the 12th, with Ohlendorf narrowly escaping an 11th inning jam for his first win of the year.

The Yankees got on the board in the 3rd inning with a big break on an error by shortstop Nick Punto that would have been the 3rd out of the inning. Instead it put Damon on 3rd and Jeter on 1st and the Yankees took advantage. Abreu doubled in Damon and he and Jeter scored on Alex Rodriguez's 2-run single.

With the score tied 3-3 in the 6th, the Yankees struck again against Twins starter Boof Bonser. Hideki Matsui drew a lead off walk and Jason Giambi followed with a single to knock Bonser from the game. Jesse Crain came on and retired Robinson Cano on a pop up, but Jose Molina drilled a double into the right field corner to score Matsui and chase Giambi to 3rd. Melky Cabrera's sac fly to deep left plated Giambi and Damon's single to left brought home Molina for a 6-3 lead.

Wang appeared to be settling down after working out of a jam in the 4th and retiring the Twins in order in the 5th, but he ran into trouble again in the 6th. Singles by Delmon Young and Nick Punto put two on with 1 out, and the pair quickly pulled off a double steal to advance into scoring position. Carlos Gomez singled to right to cut the lead to 6-4, with Punto stopping at 3rd. Ramirez came on to face Alexi Casilla, who hit into a force out to narrow the Yankees margin to 6-5. Joe Mauer flied out to end the frame.

Both teams had opportunities to go ahead before the 12th, but came up short. A-Rod drew a 1-out walk in the 10th and promptly stole 2nd Base. But he got overly aggressive and was picked off at 2nd as he took too big a lead.

Ohlendorf struck out the first two hitters in the bottom of the 10th and then ran into trouble. Mike Lamb narrowly missed a home run before pulling into 3rd with a triple. The Yankees elected to intentionally walk Punto to face the more inexperienced Gomez. After Punto took 2nd on fielder's indifference, Ohlendorf struck out Gomez to retire the side.

Protecting a one run lead, Mariano Rivera made it look like child's play again, retiring the Twins in order for his 15th save in as many opportunities.

News and Notes

The Yankees stole a season-high 4 bases in 5 attempts.

Chien-Ming Wang is 0-2, 5.67 in his last 5 games.

Hideki Matsui went 1-4 to extend his hitting streak to 9 games.

Yankees Rally to Sweep Mariners

Just as they have been for most of this season, the Yankees were struggling against a left-handed starter. In this case it was the Mariners Jarrod Washburn. Thankfully, Mariners manager John McLaren pulled him after the 6th inning. The Yankees rallied for 4 runs in the 8th inning to beat the Mariners 6-5 and completed a 3-game sweep in the process. The victory also extended the Yankees winning streak to 5 games, and it was also the first game that the Yankees came back, in 23 attempts, this season to win when being down after the 7th inning.

Derek Jeter lead off the 8th with a walk against Sean Green and he came around to score on Bobby Abreu's double off of lefty Arthur Rhodes, cutting the lead to 5-3. McLaren quickly went to his closer J.J. Putz for a 6-out save, but the big right-hander walked Alex Rodriguez. Putz got a break when Jason Giambi was called out on strikes a 2-2 pitch that was well out of the strike zone, for the 1st out. But Hideki Matsui, pinch-hitting for Shelley Duncan, hit a little dribbler to the right out of the mound. Putz (1-2, BS 3) lunged for, going to his knees as he fielded it. His throw was wild to 1st Base, allowing Abreu to score and A-Rod to move to 3rd. Robinson Cano's sac fly to deep center not only tied the game at 5-5, but allowed Matsui to reach 2nd Base. Jose Molina then delivered a 2-out double to deep center to give the Yankees their first lead of the day, 6-5. Then it was all up to the Yankees closer Mariano Rivera and the king of the bullpen came through again with a 1-2-3 9th inning for his 12th save in as many chances.

The Yankees got the opportunity to win because reliever Edwar Ramirez gave them 1.2 innings of shutout relief after starter Chien-Ming Wang faltered. Ramirez (1-0) has now thrown 12.2 scoreless innings over 11 appearances this season. He's also struck out 15.

With the game tied 1-1 in the 3rd, Wang issued walks to Adrian Beltre and Richie Sexson, sandwiched around a single by Kenji Johjima, to load the bases. Yuniesky Betancourt singled through the left side for a 2-1 Mariners lead and Duncan mishandled Ichiro Suzuki's grounder to 1st to allow another runner to score. If not for an odd double play, the inning could have been bigger for the Mariners. Duncan dropped Jose Lopez's line drive, but threw home to force Johjima at the plate. Molina then fired to Cano at 2nd to complete an odd 3-2-6 double play.

The Mariners finally drove Wang to the showers in the 7th after Joe Girardi probably left him in too long. Wang allowed 1-out hits to Betancourt and Lopez to put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Vidro then singled to right-center to plate both runners and pushed the Mariners lead to 5-2.

News and Notes

Derek Jeter's RBI double in the 2nd and Johnny Damon's RBI ground out in the 5th were the Yankees runs prior to the 8th.

The victory was the 2nd of Edwar Ramirez's brief major league career.

Ichiro Suzuki homered in the 2nd inning, his 3rd of the season.
