Breaking News: Yankees Acquire Nady and Marte

SI's Jon Heyman is reporting that the Yankees have acquired right-handed hitting outfielder Xavier Nady and lefty set up man Damaso Marte from the Pittsburgh Pirates for outfielder Jose Tabata, and pitchers Ross Ohlendorf and Phil Coke, and another minor league prospect.

The Yankees have not made an official announcement yet and all players will have to clear physicals.

Update 8:25 PM EDT

According to mlb.com, the 4th player is believed to be pitcher George Kontos.

The Scranton Yankees came from behind to top the Buffalo Bisons 5-2. Ross Ohlendorf made his first start for the Yankees, allowing 1 run in 3 innings pitched. The Yankees trailed 2-0 until tying it in the 6th inning on a Justin Christian 2-run home run. Then it was red hot J.D. Closser striking in the 7th with a 3-run home run, his second in as many games. J.B. Cox pitched 2 scoreless frames for the win.

Chad Jennings reported that Justin Christian has been named to the Triple-A All-Star Team. Austin Jackson, Chris Malec, PJ Pilittere and Jason Jones have been named to the Double-A All-Star squad.

Shelley Duncan will getting checked out today for a possible separated shoulder.

The Trenton Thunder lost the first game of their three game series with the Portland SeaDogs 4-1. The Thunder fell behind early, as George Kontos got tagged for 3 runs in the 1st inning. Zach Kroenke and Eric Wordekemper did a good job keeping the Thunder in the game over the final 4 innings, but Trenton could manage only a single run after an Austin Jackson double in the 8th.

Mike Ashmore reported that Jose Tabata had to leave the game with a possible hamstring issue. It was later reported as a cramp, but he's not expected to play today. Carlos Mendoza also had to leave the game after being hit in the leg by a pitch.

19-yr old Deolis Guerra, acquired from the Mets in the Johan Santana deal, shut out the Tampa Yankees on just 3 hits as the Ft. Myers Miracle won 4-0. Phil Bartleski was the lone bright spot for Tampa. The 25-yr old reliever has allowed just 3 earned runs in 27.1 innings this season, with 33 strikeouts. He's also walked just 9 hitters.

The Charleston RiverDogs had their 3-game winning streak snapped as the Savannah Sand Gnats salvaged the finale of the 4-game series with a 7-0 win. Lance Pendleton was tagged with 4 earned runs in 4 innings pitched. Austin Krum had 2 of the RiverDogs 6 hits and also added a walk.

Yankees Offense Steps Up

The Yankees lineup slumped in April and the beginning of May, but it has started to come around just in time. The Yankees bats came through when the Yankees arms didn't last night. Consecutive singles by Johnny Damon, Derek Jeter, and Bobby Abreu in the 12th put the Yankees ahead and Mariano Rivera slammed the door shut on a 7-6 win.

Chien-Ming Wang was ineffective and has now gone 5 straight starts without a win. The Twins reached him for single runs in each of the first three innings and added two more in the 6th, one of which scored after Wang left the game.

But the Yankees matched the Twins output, scoring 3 runs in the 1st and 6th innings, and held a 6-5 lead after 6. But in the 7th, Edwar Ramirez gave up his first run of the season, an opposite field home run by Michael Cuddyer to tie the game. Jose Veras, Kyle Farnsworth, and Ross Ohlendorf held the game in check until the 12th, with Ohlendorf narrowly escaping an 11th inning jam for his first win of the year.

The Yankees got on the board in the 3rd inning with a big break on an error by shortstop Nick Punto that would have been the 3rd out of the inning. Instead it put Damon on 3rd and Jeter on 1st and the Yankees took advantage. Abreu doubled in Damon and he and Jeter scored on Alex Rodriguez's 2-run single.

With the score tied 3-3 in the 6th, the Yankees struck again against Twins starter Boof Bonser. Hideki Matsui drew a lead off walk and Jason Giambi followed with a single to knock Bonser from the game. Jesse Crain came on and retired Robinson Cano on a pop up, but Jose Molina drilled a double into the right field corner to score Matsui and chase Giambi to 3rd. Melky Cabrera's sac fly to deep left plated Giambi and Damon's single to left brought home Molina for a 6-3 lead.

Wang appeared to be settling down after working out of a jam in the 4th and retiring the Twins in order in the 5th, but he ran into trouble again in the 6th. Singles by Delmon Young and Nick Punto put two on with 1 out, and the pair quickly pulled off a double steal to advance into scoring position. Carlos Gomez singled to right to cut the lead to 6-4, with Punto stopping at 3rd. Ramirez came on to face Alexi Casilla, who hit into a force out to narrow the Yankees margin to 6-5. Joe Mauer flied out to end the frame.

Both teams had opportunities to go ahead before the 12th, but came up short. A-Rod drew a 1-out walk in the 10th and promptly stole 2nd Base. But he got overly aggressive and was picked off at 2nd as he took too big a lead.

Ohlendorf struck out the first two hitters in the bottom of the 10th and then ran into trouble. Mike Lamb narrowly missed a home run before pulling into 3rd with a triple. The Yankees elected to intentionally walk Punto to face the more inexperienced Gomez. After Punto took 2nd on fielder's indifference, Ohlendorf struck out Gomez to retire the side.

Protecting a one run lead, Mariano Rivera made it look like child's play again, retiring the Twins in order for his 15th save in as many opportunities.

Yankees Keep Stumbling Along

Ian Kennedy was better than he's been, but one bad inning put a sour note on his performance yesterday. The Yankees got him off the hook, but couldn't stop Cleveland from coming away with a 4-3 win yesterday at the Jake. Tied 3-3 in the bottom of the 9th and no Joba Chamberlain to turn to, Joe Girardi opted for Ross Ohlendorf.

Ohlendorf struck out Casey Blake to start the inning, but then gave up consecutive singles to Grady Sizemore and David Dellucci. A wild pitch moved the runners up and forced the Yankees hand. An intentional walk was issued to Travis Hafner, which meant Ohlendorf had to face Victor Martinez with the bases loaded and just one out. Moments later Martinez singled to left field to score Sizemore with the game winner.

Kennedy had plenty of pressure on him in this one. He knows that he could be just one more bad start away from being sent to the bullpen or, more likely, down to Scranton. And in yesterday's 2nd inning was as bad it gets. Singles by Jhonny Peralta and Asdrubel Cabrera put two aboard with no one out, and Franklin Gutierrez moved the runners up with a sac bunt.

Kennedy pitched from behind for much of the game and walked Blake to loaded the bases. A 3-2 pitch to Sizemore missed for ball four and a 1-0 Indians lead. Dellucci's sac fly brought home a second run and Hafner hit a blooper to center for an RBI single and a 3-0 lead. Martinez finally flied out to end the frame. Kennedy was done after just 5 innings and 105 pitches.

The Yankees had at least one base runner on each in the first 5 innings against Indians emergency starter Jeremy Sowers, but could nothing with it. Finally in the 6th they were able to break through.

The Yankees loaded the bases with one out on a single by Alex Rodriguez, Jason Giambi's hit by pitch, and a walk to Shelley Duncan. Indians manager Eric Wedge sent for right-hander Jensen Lewis with Morgan Ensberg due up. Girardi countered with Robinson Cano, whose miseries continued with a called third strike for the second out of the inning. But Jorge Posada, pinch-hitting for Jose Molina, delivered in the clutch. The less than fleet footed catcher tripled to left to tie the game, and in usual Yankees fashion, he was stranded.

The Yankees had one more chance in the 9th against Masa Kobayashi when they put two men aboard. But Derek Jeter's hard hit grounder through the middle was deadened by the mound and ended up an inning ending double play.

That's the Yankees this year- no clutch play and no luck, except for bad.

Jorge Posada's pinch-triple was the first by a Yankee since Paul O'Neill in 1995.

Johnny Damon stayed hot with a 4-5 that raised his average to .273.
