Yankees Drop Series Finale

The Yankees lack of hitting last night carried over into this afternoon as the dropped the final game of the 4 game series with Toronto, 3-2. Chien-Ming Wang cruised through the first 6 innings, but ran into a wall in the 8th, and the Yankee bats had no answer for starter Dustin McGowan and the Jays' pen.

This game was pretty much the opposite of Wednesday night's contest when the Jays scored in the 1st and were blanked afterward. This time it was the Yankees who struck first and then hit a dry spell. Johnny Damon and Derek Jeter drew back to back walks to start the game, and Bobby Abreu brought them both home with a double.

With a 2-0 lead, Wang (10-5) dazzled the Jays with a mix of his fastball, slider, and his nasty sinker. But Matt Stairs lead off the 8th with a double and Vernon Wells followed with an infield single. Troy Glaus drove a ball to deep center for an out, but both runners advanced on the play.

Frank Thomas ricocheted a ball of Wang's leg that resulted into an RBI ground out and a 2-1 game. Aaron Hill quickly tied it up with a triple to right center, and scored the go ahead run on Greg Zaun's single back up the middle.

The Yankees didn't mount much of a threat to McGowan (6-5) after the 1st. They put 2 men on in the 3rd, but Alex Rodriguez bounced into an inning ending double play. Casey Janssen retired the side in order in the 8th, and turned things over to closer Jeremy Accardo in the 9th.

A-Rod lead off with a single, but Hideki Matsui popped out and Melky Cabrera grounded out, with A-Rod moving to 2nd. Down to their last chance, Robinson Cano flied out to Reed Johnson in left to end it. Accardo recorded his 14th save.

The Yankees had their 5 game winning streak snapped, but did take 3 of 4 in the series.

Hideki Matsui singled in the 6th to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, 2 shy of his Yankees' high.

It was Chien-Ming Wang's first loss since May 26. He had won 7 straight decisions and twice did not figure in the outcome.
