As you know by now instant replay made its debut in last night's Yankees-Rays game. While the ESPN replays were inconclusive, ump Charlie Relaford and the office in NY were privy to a replay that showed the ball did clear the foul pole in fair territory before hooking into foul territory. The most remarkable thing, by far, is that only two minutes and 15 seconds elapsed before a ruling was made. Maybe the NFL can learn from it.

Jason Giambi played last night despite suffering a nasty gash to his eyelid after walking into a bathroom door.

Mike Schmidt congratulated A-Rod on passing him on the all-time home run list.

Via the Phillies' PR department, Schmidt said he was happy for Rodriguez, whom he spoke to during the introductions at the All-Star Game in July at Yankee Stadium.

"I want to congratulate Alex on 548 and wish him well the remainder of 2008," Schmidt said before the milestone blast.

Damon Opponheimer must rue the day he picked C.J. Henry over Matt Garza.

Bobby Murcer has been nominated for the Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasting excellence. Fans can take part in the vote at Yankees.com.

The Daily Yankeeland - 8/22

We woke up this morning and it was still true: Carl Pavano is pitching tomorrow. The Yankees should just run Phil Hughes out there and stop treating him with kid gloves.

"I'm not asking him to make amends," Manager Joe Girardi said. "I'm just asking him to come and compete. I tell every player when they come here, it's a clean slate. I'm just expecting him to do his thing."

That was what Joe Girardi told Tyler Kepner about Pavano's comeback.

Joba Chamberlain is expected to throw 35 pitches in his Saturday bullpen session.

Phil Mushnick takes a dig at some of Michael Kay's hypocrisy.

The Steinbrenner boys are reportedly in negotiations with Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney for a farewell concert at Yankee Stadium. Can't be outdone by the Wilpons, ya know?

Hal Steinbrenner used Derek Jeter as a conduit last week. As several beat writers have pointed out, Hal- and not Hank- is the Steinbrenner son who is really running the show. Hank may be making the headlines, but he never goes to games, wasn't at Bobby Murcer's Memorial service, etc..

Mike Ashmore reports on the Trenton Thunder's playoff-clinching win last night.

The Staten Island Yankees have won 8 straight.

What a difference a year makes. One year ago today, 8/22/07, the Orioles got lambasted by the Rangers, 30-3. The Yankees can't score 30 runs in a month.

Forgot to mention this the other day: Craig Biggio joined Mickey Mantle as the only MLB player to have number 7 retired.

The Daily Yankeeland - 6/23

The New York Post's Steve Serby has a Q&A with Mike Mussina. His colleague Mike Vaccaro has a story on Jason Giambi's revival.

Peter Abraham reported this afternoon that Al Aceves has been promoted to Scranton. This will be the third level that the former Mexican League pitcher plays at this year.

Earlier this year Kyle Farnsworth blamed Joe Torre for his ineffectiveness. Now he's saying the Yankees fans are too fickle. Can this guy take some responsibility for his ineffectiveness? Apparently not.

Ken Griffey Jr.'s home run off of Farnsworth was his first Stadium home run since 1999. Oh, and Farnsworth didn't like that the Yankee fans showed their appreciation for Jr.'s career by giving hi an ovation. Grow up.

David Waldstein of the Star Ledger points out that Derek Jeter has reached base safely in 37 straight interleague games.

Great line from David Cone during this weekend's broadcast, as reported by Phil Mushnick. "David Cone on YES, Wednesday, was asked by Michael Kay if he ever had a teammate who didn't swear. "None I trusted," said Cone." Can you say, "Chad Curtis"?

The Daily Yankeeland - 5/20

Maybe we should change that title to the sometimes Yankeeland, since we haven't been writing it on a daily basis. Anyway........

Bob Raismann doesn't write new stuff every day either which is why he's a week behind in his shot at Hank Steinbrenner. Even Suzyn Waldman took a shot at Boss Jr. when she was on with Benigno and Roberts on the FAN.

"No. I don't think anybody pays attention (to Hank Steinbrenner)," Waldman said. "... Every time Hank goes out and says something, 10 minutes later he's saying, 'Well, that's not exactly what I meant to say.'"

That's stunning coming from one of the all-time Koolaid drinkers. Of course Waldman does have a point. As the Post's Kevin Kernan reports, Hank said yesterday not to count out the Yankees.

The NY Times reports that the idiot who buried the David Ortiz jersey in the concrete of the new Stadium, also buried a scorecard from the 2004 ALCS. Does anyone really care? If you are a Yankees fan does this really bother you? Seriously? They should have left Ortiz's jersey down there, he was hitting like he was buried in cement. Perhaps they should just bury the construction worker instead.

In case you didn't see it, and we only saw the headline of the video (just why did NBC give him the weekly spot), Mad Dog Russo, that moronexpert on all sports, said the Yankees are dead. May not happen, but I guess he hasn't learned from the past couple of season. No matter how bad things are, you don't kill off a team in May.

And in case you missed it in yesterday's paper or online, Phil Mushnick gave the Yankees a well deserved tongue lashing for their treatment of fans on Friday night. As we said on Saturday it was a disgraceful act that also occurred on opening day.

Waffle Mike and the Indecisive Dog

If you read columns by Phil Mushnick and Bob Raissman, you know that they have an agenda against Mike Francesa and Chris Russo, a.k.a "Mike and the Mad Dog". But at times they are right on the money with their criticism, and that is the case with Mushnick's latest piece.

It describes the flip-flopping that the two bozos regularly do with their opinions and so-called expertise.

You'll want to read this, especially if you heard the Bergen Record's Ian O'Conner on the show last Friday.
