Wang With a W
The Yankees have come to rely on Chien-Ming Wang to do what he does best- win. Last night The Wanger ended the Yankees 3-game losing streak and won after a Yankees loss for the 11th time in his career. Wang was on his game as was the defense behind him as the Yankees beat the Seattle Mariners 5-1. Defense let down Mariners starter Erik Bedard with 4 errors that lead to a pair of unearned runs. The first of those four errors bit the Mariners in the 1st inning. Derek Jeter reached on a miscue by fellow shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt and came around on singles by Bobby Abreu and Hideki Matsui. Adrian Beltre's error of a Morgan Ensberg hot shot started the 2nd and Ensberg was credited with a stolen base after Jose Lopez dropped Kenji Johjima's throw to 2nd Base. Alberto Gonzalez followed with a single and both runners came home on Melky Cabrera's lined double into the left field corner.
Wang, who had to leave after 6 innings and 90 pitches due to a hand cramp, only allowed one runner to reach 2nd Base through 5 innings. In the 6th, Ichiro Suzuki singled, stole 2nd and 3rd, and came home on a Raul Ibanez ground out for the lone Mariners run.The Yankees came up with a pair of insurance runs in the 8th to seal the deal. Ensberg's single scored Abreu and Jose Molina brought home another run with a sacrifice fly. That made it a non-save situation for Mariano Rivera who retired the Mariners in order in the 9th to finish off the win.
News and Notes
Derek Jeter scored his 1,391st run to pass Joe Dimaggio for sole possession of 4th place on the all-time team list.Chien-Ming Wang is now 6-0, 3.00 on the season and 7-0 lifetime against the Mariners.
Jose Molina, who started the season red hot, is now in an 0-22 slump.
As expected, Bobby Murcer returned to the YES booth last night, joining Michael Kay and Paul O'Neill.

The Daily Yankeeland - 4/28
The Yankees play the finale of their four game set with the Indians tonight in Cleveland. Even though Tuesday's home game is at night, can the Yankees ever have an early start on a travel day? Is it because this game is on ESPN again. Seriously.
Weather may effect tonight's game as well. There's a 50% chance of rain by game time and it increases to 60% by 8 p.m.
Derek Jeter's double yesterday tied him with Joe Dimaggio for 5th place on the all-time team list with 389 two-baggers.
Chien-Ming Wang joined teammates Andy Pettitte (1997) and Mike Mussina (2003) in starting the season 5-0. Wang also had one no decision. Wang changed speeds yesterday much more often than he did in last year's two ALDS losses.
Mussina starts tonight's finale against left-hander Aaron Laffey.
Alex Rodriguez is not 100% recovered from his quad strain, but will continue to play. He has just 2 RBI in his last 13 games and just 10 for the month.
Robinson Cano ended an 0-14 slide with his single yesterday. And of course then he was picked off. That's how his April has gone.
Indians centerfielder Grady Sizemore saw his 382 game consecutive playing streak on Sunday after mildly spraining his ankle on Saturday. Sizemore was gunned down at 2nd Base by Jorge Posada, whose shoulder paid the price yesterday.
Roger Clemens' world could be getting a whole lot uglier. Stories are starting to surface that Clemens had a 10-year extra marital affair with trouble country singer Mindy McCready. It gets worse. McReady was reportedly on 15 when the affair began.
Tigers Hall of Fame broadcaster Ernie Harwell has written a piece in the Detroit Free Press on Yankees bench coach Rob Thomson's Tiger roots.

Where Have You Gone Joe DiMaggio
While the major league Yankees continue to flop, there are a number of minor leaguers in the Yankees' system that are having outstanding seasons. One of those players is Charleston River Dog's Mitch Hilligoss.Hilligoss tied the Atlantic League record by hitting in his 35th consecutive game. He didn't accomplish the feat until his final at-bat. The 2-run double pulled him even with another former Yankees prospect Scott Seabol, who hit in 35 games for the 1999 Greensboro Bats.
Hilligoss' streak is the 3rd longest in the last 20 years of minor league baseball. Only Joey Cora (37) and Brent Gates (36) have hit in more consecutive games. Just as any major leaguer, Hilligoss will also be chasing Joe DiMaggio. The Yankee Clipper set the minor league record by hitting in 61 straight games in 1933.
Longest Streaks in Minor League History
61 - Joe DiMaggio (1933)
55 - Roman Mejias (1954)
49 - Jack Ness (1915)

56 Games or Marilyn Monroe?
Hard to tell which is the greatest accomplishment. Either way, Joe D started his trek towards both on this date in 1936. The Yankee Clipper made him major league debut, going 3-6 against the St. Louis Browns. He wore #9.
15 years later another rookie, Gil McDougald had himself a day to remember. McDougald, the 1951 AL ROY, drove in 6 runs in one inning as the Yankees stomped the same St. Louis Browns 17-3.
