Jeff Karstens continued his rehab by allowing a run on just 3 hits over 6 innings. He threw 82 pitches, 55 for strikes, as he walked 1 and struck out 6. Chase Wright moved to the pen and tossed 3 solid innings for the save. Kevin Reese (9th) belted a grand slam and drove in 5 runs.
Saturday - Charlotte 5 Scranton 1
A bit of a tough afternoon for Tyler Clippard. He allowed 3 runs on 9 hits in just 5 innings of work. The Yankee Clippard threw 102 pitches, 62 for strikes.
Friday - Scranton 8 Charlotte 4
Eric Duncan's (8th) 3-run blast was the big blow in a game winning 4 run 7th inning rally. Starter Colter Bean got knocked around, but Sean Henn, T.J. Beam (2-2), and Charlie Manning shut down the Knights offense.
Trenton Thunder (AA)
Sunday - Trenton 7 New Britain 2
The Thunder snapped a 2-2 tie, with a 5 run 9th inning. Alberto Gonzalez drove in 2 of his 3 RBI in the inning, and Juan Miranda stroked a back breaking 3-run double. Ian Kennedy didn't figure in the decision, but allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 6 in 5 innings. Scott Patterson picked up his 3rd win in 4 decisions.
Saturday - Trenton 5 New Britain 4
Jeffrey Marquez threw 6 innings of shutout ball to earn his 10th win of the year. Cody Ehlers belted a 2-run HR, his 5th, and Juan Miranda added 2 RBI.
Friday - New Britain 7 Trenton 1
Joba Chamberlain got roughed up for the first time this season, allowing 7 runs in just 4.2 innings. He allowed 9 hits, including 3 home runs, walked 3, and struck out 7.
Tampa Yankees (A)
Sunday - Tampa 4 Lakeland 0 (Game 1), Tampa 4 Lakeland 3 (Game 2)
For the 2nd time in 5 days, the Tampa Yankees pitching staff combined on a no-hitter. On Wednesday, Kevin Whelan, David Robertson, and Josh Schmidt threw a no-no against Jupiter. This time it was Jose Veras (2 IP) and Daniel McCutcheon (5 IP) turning the trick. After Veras threw as part of his rehab stint, McCutcheon, who is normally a starter, came out of the pen and finished the job. Despite walking 5, McCutcheon also kept Lakeland off the scoreboard to earn his league leading 11th win.
In the nightcap, Austin Jackson's (7th) 2-run HR was the highlight of a 4 run 5th inning. Anthony Claggett won his 3rd game of the season with some help from David Robertson.
Friday - Tampa 4 Lakeland 3
George Kontos (2-4) allowed 3 unearned 3 runs over 6 innings, and Eric Wordekemper picked up 24th save. Wordekemper lowered his ERA to 0.78 in the process. Austin Jackson had 3 hits, including a solo home run.
Charleston (A)
Sunday - Asheville 5 Charleston 3
It wasn't a good day for the River Dogs pitching, but Josue Calzado (7th) did belt a 2-run HR.
Saturday - Charleston 10 Kannapolis 8
The River Dogs rallied late from an 8-6 deficit to complete a 4 game series sweep. It was a big Day for Kevin Smith, who went 3-3 with 4 RBI. Smith's 2-run HR, his first of the season, in the bottom of the 7th tied the game at 8-8. The very next hitter was Joe Muich who belted a solo shot to give the River Dogs the lead. Mike Dunn allowed just 2 unearned runs over 5 innings, and had left with a 6-2 lead. Brady Martinez picked up the win.
Friday - Charleston 10 Kannapolis 0
Ivan Nova (5-4), Paul Patterson, and Ferdin Tejeda combined on a 6-hit shutout. Kyle Anson drove in 4 runs to pace the offense.
Staten Island (Short Season)
Sunday - Staten Island 4 State College 3
Ryan Zink (4-1) threw 6 shutout innings, and David Williams drove in 3 runs with a bases loaded double.
Saturday - Staten Island 6 State College 3
Chris Farley, yes you read that right, made his season debut by allowing 2 unearned runs in 5 innings pitched, and picked up the victory. Farley had been signed from an independent league earlier in the week. David Williams and Chris Raber each had 2 hits and RBI.
GCL Yankees (Rookie)
Saturday - GCL Yankees 6 GCL Indians 1
The Yankees broke open a close game with 4 runs in the 9th. Ben Blumenthal was 4-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and Wilkins De la Rosa earned his 1st win.
Friday - GCL Yankees 6 GCL Phillies 0
4 Yankees pitchers combined on a 2-hit shutout with Manny Barreda (4 IP) picking up the win. Tim Dennehy went the final 3 to earn the save. Wady Rufino belted a 2-run HR, his 2nd of the season.
