Insert Foot Here

You've probably heard or read the comments by now. Gary Sheffield, the king of wearing a chip on your shoulder, has uttered more lava from Mt. Moron. We won't go back into his past idiotic remarks. We don't have that much time. This time Sheff is crying racism and pointing his finger directly at Joe Torre.

As part of an interview for HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel", Sheffield to Andrea Kremer that Torre treated black players differently than white (he seemed to leave Latin players completely out of the dialogue).

"I know when I was there, the couple of blacks that were there, every one of them had an issue with the organization," Sheffield told Kremer, according to Newsday. "They had an issue with (manager) Joe Torre. They weren't treated like everybody else."

Sheff was referring in particular to Kenny Lofton (who has been known to be a clubhouse cancer at times) and Tony Womack. In case anyone has forgotten, they both sucked as part of the Yankees.

Kremer reminded Sheffield that the Yankees most prominent player, Derek Jeter, is black. Sheffield countered by saying that Jeter "isn't all the way black" since he comes from mixed heritage. He then made a "some of my best friends are..." comment when talking about how his own son is from a mixed relationship.

It's quite amazing how other prominent black players - Tim Raines, Chili Davis, Daryl Strawberry, Doc Gooden, Charlie Hayes (do I need to continue?) - had no problems playing for Torre. At least not any problems that were due to racism.

Torre's best friend in baseball was/is Bob Gibson. Yes, that's right...Bob Gibson is black.

Just to make this even more of a laugh riot, Sheffield also addressed the steroid issue.

"In a million years, I don't care what anybody says, steroids is something you shoot in your butt," he said. "I do know that. The bottom line is steroids is something you stick in your butt, period."

Guess Sheff forgot that he testified before a grand jury that he had unwittingly used "The Clear". Of course he also must have forgotten about "The Cream". Then again, Sheff is no rocket scientist.

Sheffield obviously has to motivate himself by degrading where he has been before. (As has happened in many cases, he went out and had a big game - a grand slam last night after remarks were released). He's done it everywhere he goes. And if things don't work out in Detroit, somehow it will all be Jim Leyland's fault or someone other than the man in the mirror.
