Minor League Recap - 6/18

Jason Jones had a game he'd like to forget for Trenton tonight in the Thunder's 9-8 loss to the Harrisburg Senators. 7 runs allowed, 3 of them earned 4.2 innings. And he can't blame his fielders. Those 4 unearned runs were due to an error he made.

Jose Tabata and Ramiro Pena each hit their 2nd home runs of the year off of former Rutgers product Bobby Brownlie.

Bad night for Tampa Yankees starter Grant Duff too. The Clearwater Threshers pounded him for 8 runs in 5.1 innings and the Threshers won it 9-4. Jose Gil provided the bright spot with a 4-4 night, that included a pair of doubles, and 3 RBI.

Charleston RiverDogs are still off as the last part of the South Atlantic League All-Star game. Catcher Jesus Montero was the runner up in the league's home run derby on Tuesday night. The contest actually ran prior to, and during the game itself. It left Montero a little gassed after he caught 2 innings.

The runner-up was the Yankees’ Jesus Montero, who put on an impressive display himself in the early rounds. The righty-hitting Montero used the wind to his advantage in repeatedly sending drives out over the fence in right-center field, the deepest part of the park. Montero hit 11 home runs over the first two rounds of the competition but managed only one in the finals, which is understandable given that he had just finished catching for two innings and was then asked to come back out and finish the derby.

"I usually hit it better to right, with more power to right," Montero said through an interpreter after the game. "I can extend my arms out that way instead of turning to pull the ball and not getting as much extension."

Montero's squad got pounded by the North, 13-4. Charleston's Jason Stephens was one of only two South pitchers to throw a scoreless inning.

The Scranton Yankees had the night off.

Minor League Recap - 6/3

Triple-A hitters have finally figured out Kei Igawa, but remarkably he still won last night's Scranton-Rochester game. That's because the Yankees rallied from a 6-1 deficit to beat the Red Wings 10-6.

Chris Stewart homered, and he and Justin Christian drove in 3 runs each as Scranton scored 3 in the 5th, 2 in the 6th, and 4 more in the 7th. Greg Porter also hit his 2nd home run.

Chad Jennings reports that Phil Coke may be on his way up from Trenton to make at least one start for Scranton.

Tampa lost their 4th straight, 8-7 in extra innings, after blowing a 3-run lead in the 9th to the Clearwater Phillies. The loss overshadowed a big night for Kevin Smith, who went 5-6 with 2 doubles, a home run, and 4 RBI. Mike Dunn had a mediocre outing, allowing 3 runs in 5 innings, but still stood to get the win. But the Phillies roughed up closer Josh Schmidt, before beating Stephen Artz in the 12th. Tim Battle also homered for the Yankees.

The Charleston RiverDogs won their 6th straight, a 5-2 victory over the Rome Braves. Justin Snyder and Brad Suttle drove in 2 runs each and three Dogs pitchers combined on a 5-hitter. Jairo Heredia allowed just 2 hits over 4 innings before giving way to Jesse Hoover (3-2) who picked up the win with 4 innings of work. Chace Vacek picked up his 4th save, striking out 2 of 3 in the 9th.

4 RiverDogs have been selected to play in the South Atlantic League All-Star game. Catcher Jesus Montero, 2nd Baseman Justin Snyder, and pitchers Jason Stephens and Jonathan Ortiz will travel to Greensboro, N.C. for the game on June 17.

The Trenton Thunder had the night off, but start a 3-game series tonight with the Connecticut Defenders.
