The Anniversary that Ruth Built
With a new stadium being built in the shadows of the glory that is Yankee Stadium, today we celebrate the 85th anniversary of the "House that Ruth Built".
On this date, April 18, in 1923, Yankee Stadium opened to a packed house of 74,200. The Yankees were playing the Babe Ruth's former team, the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees won 4-1 and the Bambino began the Stadium legacy with a home run.
It's hard to imagine that the grand old place will one day be turned to rubble. Like many, we were under the impression that the the lower deck of the Stadium would remains, but apparently it is going to be completely demolished. For shame.
