The Roger Clemens perjury investigation continued with sleaze bag Kirk Radimonski on the stand. Fellow sleaze bag Brian McNamee thinks the Rocket is headed for prison. Perhaps they should share a cell.

Shelley Duncan cleared waivers and was out righted to Scranton. He'll also receive an invite to the Major League training camp along with Austin Jackson, Jesus Montero, Austin Romine, Mark Melancon, Kei Igawa (CRINGE), Jason Johnson, Angel Berroa, Jason Johnson, Kevin Cash, Kyle Anson, Colin Curtis,Eduardo Nunez, Ramiro Pena, P.J. Pilittere, John Rodriguez, Doug Bernier, Justin Leone, Todd Linden, and Kevin Russo.

Xavier Nady, Melky Cabrera, and Brian Bruney have filed for salary arbitration.

Yankees Blogs Touched by Sadness

I never knew Todd Drew. Never had the chance to speak with him. But his death has touched me and the Yankees community. He and I shared a blog link. He wrote his own blog, "Yankees for Justice", as well as contributed to "The Bronx Banter".

He lost his battle with cancer early yesterday morning at age 41. Way too young. We all the know the pain of cancer. Way too much. He's being remembered today by Yankees beat writers like Pete Abraham and Tyler Kepner, other Yankees bloggers, and even Curt Schilling.

It's difficult to read his last entry on December 22 without getting choked up. Rest in peace, Todd.

Anybody Got a 5?

Still no Andy Pettitte, still no sure #5 starter in the Yankees' rotation. We thank you for participating in our most recent poll - What should the Yankees do about Andy Pettitte?

We were a bit surprised by the number of people (31%) who said let him walk. We think there's a direct correlation to his HGH use, as well as leaving once before, and that poll selection.

The highest vote total (40%), of the 86 readers who answered the poll, agreed with our choice- add incentives to the $10 million guarantee.

"Stick to your guns" and keep the offer where it's at came in third (20%), while giving in and giving Pettitte $16 million was last with just 8 voters opting for that choice.

Now we'll sit back and see how this all plays out.

Michael Young will NOT Replace Robinson Cano

Okay, those of you throwing that crazy idea out there of trading for Michael Young and playing him at second base, can stop now. Young has agreed to play third base for the Rangers and has retracted his request to be traded.

Some Yankees fans, those who need an all-star at every position, were hoping the Yankees would deal for Young, enabling them to either move Cano to center field or trade him for pitching or a star center fielder.

Elvis is in the building - Young's spot at shortstop will be taken by 20-yr old rookie Elvis Andrus, who was acquired in 2007 as part of the Mark Teixeira deal with the Braves. He hit .295 last season at Double-A Frisco, with a .350 on-base percentage, and 54 stolen bases, and is considered a stellar defender. He also got a glimpse of Yankee Stadium in it's final season as a participant in the Futures game.

Young know his transition will be tough, but knows it will be even tougher for the rookie.

"Elvis is a good kid," Young said. "There were a couple of things about this that were tough. One is, the fans shouldn't have to choose between the club and a player. We're all working for the same thing. That's the last thing I wanted to happen.
"It's also tough for Elvis. He's a good kid. I met him last year in Spring Training and really like him. I want to be there for him and do everything I can to help him.

Captain Clutch

We're not talking about Derek Jeter this time. An amazing round of applause, kudos, high fives, back slaps, kisses, and bro hugs to Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger III. The 57-yr old is America's hero today after safely landing US Airways flight 1549 in the Hudson River yesterday afternoon.

It's mind boggling to think of what Capt. Sullenberger did, avoiding ships, bridges, the Intrepid Museum, etc., to bring the plane down after double engine failure.

We think we can this Captain throwing out the first pitch at a Yankees and/or Mets game before you know it.

Here's to you Captain!!!

Texas Twosome Twistin' in the Wind

Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte were once on top of the world. The demand for their services was high. They could command just about any price they wanted to pitch in the major leagues. That was never more evident than when the Yankees paid Clemens $28 million to pitch part of the 2007 season. But all that changed last winter with allegations and/or admittance of performance enhancing drug use.

Clemens is a pariah at the moment, keeping as low a profile as possible. Last year he showed up at the Astros' Spring Training camp in Kissimmee, but this year owner Drayton McLane basically said, "thanks, but no thanks".

"He kind of came on his own last year and I thought that presented too much confusion, with all the media around these 19- to 25-year-olds," McLane told the Daily News Tuesday. "That's putting a lot of pressure on these young men. As far as pitching to minor leaguers this year, I'd have to sit and talk with him, but I think most likely not."

Pettitte meanwhile sits, waiting to sign a contract somewhere, preferably with the Yankees. Combine a bad economy with an average season, throw in the taint of HGH usage, and there isn't quite the demand for Pettitte that there has been in the past. In fact, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports that negotiations between Pettitte and the Yankees is losing steam.

Without Pettitte, the Yankees will leave up to Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy, Al Aceves, Jason Johnson, and the rest of their minor league arms to battle it out for the fifth spot in the rotation. Of course, the Yankees could still make a trade or sign another free agent to fill the open slot.

Clemens' problems go way deeper than Pettitte's of course. He continues to get tried in the media and by fans for his purported steroid use. Then there is the heated battle with trainer/sleaze ball Brian McNamee. In addition to the anti-defamation suit that the Rocket slammed McNamee with, a grand jury is investigating whether Clemens lied to Congress. McNamee's testimony will be key as will that of investigator Jeff Novitzky.

One wonders if they could turn back the clock, would Clemens and/or Pettitte change the way they handled things in the past as well as the present. We'll never know.

R-Lev Gets Subpoenaed

Yankees' president Randy Levine was subpoenaed on Tuesday by Assemblyman Richard Brodsky (D-Westchester) to testify before a state assembly committee on Wednesday concerning monies spent on the new Yankee Stadium.

Brodsky is upset at the Yankees, and the New York City Industrial Development Authority, for what he sees as a lack of cooperation in providing documentation to back further funding requests by the Yankees.

Levine appeared on Mike Francesa's radio show to clear the air. Here are some excerpts.

Francesa: "Why has this become such a hot issue?"

Levine: "2 reasons- secondary financing, which is common and was contemplated all along... Every cent is being paid for by the Yankees"

Levine then took Brodsky to task for grand standing and distorting the facts. The facts are that the Yankees are spending 1.3 billion of their own money. New York City owns the ballpark and the Yankees are tenants. The Yankees responsible for all maintenance costs of the new Stadium.

Francesa: "The NYC Comptroller said an audit shows direct cost to the city is $325 million due to oversights and mistakes."

Levine: It's not the actual Stadium that he's referring to. As part of the arrangement, the city is building the infrastructure - brand new parks, parking garages, etc...Rising construction costs are effecting it. The Yankees get no revenue from the garages. In fact, despite spending $1.3 billion, the Yankees only get 600 parking spaces."

Francesa: "If you are paying with private financing, why going to the city?"

Levine: "The Stadium is being built with a tax exempt financing mechanism. We have a 43 year lease with the city. Since the Yankees are tenants, there are no property taxes. The Yankees will pay make payments on the bonds issued in lieu of a property tax."

Francesa: "Could this have done without the city's help?"

Levine: "No, because borrowing would have been so much higher it would have been impossible. You don't have to pay federal tax on the bonds as you would with a bank. The Yankees are also putting $225 million of their own money on top of the bond money."

So there you have it. You can listen to the entire interview on WFAN's website. The Stadium will actually cost $1.5 billion and these issues will probably be resolved pretty quickly. As Newsday reported, Mayor Bloomberg took a shot, through a spokesman, at Brodsky as well.

"I guess it makes for good political theater because it's the Yankees, but when it comes to valuable taxpayer dollars, decisions should be made on return, not rhetoric," Bloomberg spokesman Andrew Brent said.

Braves Get Their Man

After losing out on A.J. Burnett and seeing their long time starter/closer John Smoltz head north to Boston, the Atlanta Braves came to an agreement today with free agent starter Derek Lowe. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that terms are 4 years and $60 million.

The Braves offer for Burnett fell short of the money the Yankees came up with and they weren't willing to guarantee enough money for Smoltz's liking. So while they talked to Lowe along with teams such as the Mets (Seriously Omar and the Wilpons, how could you not make a comparable offer? Tim Redding?), they bided their time by bringing in Japanese starter Kenshin Kawakami.

Lowe will be playing for his 4th team in his 13 year career, the last 4 of which were spent with the LA Dodgers. He's coming off a solid 14-11, 3.24 campaign and has tough 200 innings in 5 of the last 7 seasons (he missed out on a 6th by just 2/3 of an inning).

New Big Unit to Debut Soon

We all heard good things about Andrew Brackman when the Yankees drafted the 6'10" pitcher with their first pick in the 2007 draft. But we quickly learned the NC State product would also need Tommy John surgery, meaning he wouldn't be contributing to the Yankees any time soon. That's all about to change.

Lisa Winston of MLB.com reports that Brackman is almost ready to make his professional debut. When pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training, Brackman should be ready to go. He was expected to pitch in the Gulf Coast League late last season, but an emergency appendectomy threw those plans out the window. He did get to throw in the Hawaiian Winter League.

Brackman went 3-4 with a 5.56 ERA, striking out 36 batters in 34 innings and limiting the league's batters to a .235 average. He went five or more innings in four of his starts, including three of the last four.
"His velocity was between 94-97 [mph], so he had no problems and he's ready to go for Major League camp," said Mark Newman, the Yankees' senior vice president of baseball operations. "His stuff is outstanding, and he's getting a feel for his delivery and throwing strikes. But first and foremost, he was healthy and, at times, dominant."
The delivery and mechanics are definitely the biggest challenge for Brackman, and not just because he has had so little mound time. For a pitcher of his size, there are both benefits and challenges.
"The benefits are the power and deception because the ball is released closer to the plate," Newman explained. "But the downside is you have long levers to manage, and it takes time. There aren't many of those guys in the environment to use as test cases, but most people believe that taller guys take a little longer to get their command."
That said, Newman added that Brackman has the advantage of being an exceptional athlete.
"To watch him run, he looks like he's 6-foot-2," Newman said of the young man who offsets that explosive heat with a knuckle curve and a developing changeup.

Here's hoping he can have a comparable career to the real Big Unit...with much less acrimony.

Rickey, Rice Head to Cooperstown

As expected, Rickey Henderson was a first ballot selection to the Baseball Hall of Fame in voting announced a short time ago. But Jim Rice is the man who really has to be ecstatic today. After unjustly failing to get in for several years, the Red Sox slugger and non-friend to the media received 76.4% of the vote to enter the halls of Cooperstown.

Henderson, the game's all time stolen base king (he'll be the first to remind you) was an easy choice. He's also the top run scorer of all time and second in walks to Barry Bonds, and stroked 3,055 hits. The only thing keeping him out of the hall, was his continual desire to play well into his forties.

Rice put up the numbers, but never got along with reporters, and it took it's toll in his post-career life as he snubbed time and time again for the Hall. As someone we watched in our teens, we knew that Rice deserved to be in the Hall. He was one of the most terrifying sluggers in the game, more so than Big Papi or even Manny Ramirez. We congratulate him on finally getting his due.

Disappointment

We had no expectations during the Giants run to a Super Bowl championship. This season buoyed by an 11-1 start, we had very high expectations. At the very least, to return to the NFC championship game. But it's all for naught.

We watched Hancock last night and though that was bad. It was an Oscar winner compared to today's game. The Giants played an abysmal game on the offensive side of the ball en route to a 23-11 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Eli Manning, as we've seen before, played poorly in front of a rabid home playoff crowd. He continued to show that he struggles in his home, windy field.

They can deny it all they want, but their teammate Plaxico Burress really cost them this/the season. They lost 3 of their last 4 to finish their season, (We threw the Vikings game out the window since it was meaningless and the starters hardly played.) largely because they didn't have Burress to distract defenses and make big plays.

Don't get us wrong, there were other reasons the Giants lost today besides Manning's play and Burress' absence.

The defense could not stop the Eagles in third down situations and put next to no pressure on Donovan McNabb.

Kevin Gilbride made some very questionable play calls (where was Buddy Ryan when you need him?).

Tom Coughlin made some questionable decisions, including a challenge that he was clearly going to lose, costing the Giants a time out.

John Carney missed field goals from 46 and 47 yards. Had he made even one of them, the Giants would have only needed one score, rather than two, down the stretch.

So it's Eagles-Cardinals in the NFC championship game and the Ravens against the Steelers-Chargers winner today. And we are disappointed.

I Don't Give a Damn 'bout my Bad Reputation

Pitchers and catchers report to Florida and Arizona just over a month from today, and Manny Ramirez is still unemployed. Perhaps the man-child is finally paying the price for his erratic behavior, and immense immaturity. There was no hiding the fact that he tanked it this past season to get out of Boston. But his roughing up of an older Red Sox employee may have been the straw that broke the camel's back.

In case you had forgotten, back in June the Red Sox were playing a series in Houston. Ramirez requested 16 tickets from traveling secretary Jake McCormick, who informed him that he may not be able to get that many tickets. Ramirez screamed at McCormick to do his job. An argument ensued and Ramirez shoved McCormick, who is in his 60s, to the ground. Ramirez later would apologize, but the damage was done. An already questionable reputation had worsened.

The proof is in pudding - Ramirez has been practically begging for contract offers. Other than the Dodgers' 2 year, $45 million, offers have been few and far between. Ramirez may want a 5 year deal, but he may have to take a 1 year deal to prove himself- not his baseball skills, but his dedication to his team.

You get what you pay for.

We still think Joan Jett's favorite team, the Orioles, would be a good fit for Manny.

The Newest Japense Imports

Actually it's one old and one new. The Red Sox have signed reliever Takashi Saito to a one year deal with a club option for 2010. That news come from Ken Rosenthal who reports the deal is worth between $1.5 million and $2.5 million, and could pay up to $7 million with incentives.

Saito has been his 3 year major league career as a closer for the Dodgers, but elbow problems limited him to 45 games this past season and the Dodgers decided not to offer him a deal for the upcoming season.

Former Japanese top pitcher Kenshin Kawakami has agreed to terms with the Braves, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The 33-yr old will reportedly receive a 3 year deal. Kawakami won the Sawamura Award, given to Japan's top starting pitcher, in 2004.

Swisher or Nady, Which Will it Be?

It seems a certainty that either Nick Swisher or Xavier Nady will be dealt prior to Spring Training, or at the very worst, prior to the start of the regular season. It seems almost comical in light of the recent free agent signings, but the Yankees want to lower their payroll to a figure comparable, if not lower, to last season's salaries.

That's where Swisher and Nady come in. The Yankees don't want to deal Johnny Damon and realize that Hideki Matsui doesn't have the trade value he once did. So as Ken Davidoff of Newsday writes, it's down to Nady and Swisher.

We like both players and were really impressed with Nady in his post trade deadline stint here. We'd hate to see him go, but he's a free agent after this season and with Scott Boras as his agent, the Yankees aren't likely to bring him back.

Meanwhile, Swisher is signed through 2011 and can play both outfield and first base, though he doesn't particularly stand out in either spot. Swisher's ability to play center field also weighs in, and to a lesser degree, the fact that he's a switch-hitter. The Yankees also like Swisher's "upbeat personality and fiery attitude".

With Andy Pettitte still not signed, Nady could have major value in obtaining another starting pitcher. Now it's up to Brian Cashman to find the best deal possible, which may not be easy since more calls are coming in about Swisher than Nady.

Snow is Coming, Get Snacks!

Can't be snowed in without enough snacks for a weekend of football. The divisional round is upon us with some great games. Most would agree that the Panthers-Cardinals match up is the only one where the winner is pretty much a given. Then again, that's why they indeed play the games.

The Giants and the Eagles battle for the 3rd time this season in Sunday's NFC East showdown. We're confidently nervous or is it nervously confident? Either way, Big Blue will have all its forces at the ready, most notably Brandon Jacobs. And while Jacobs and others may not be 100%, they are ready to go.

The field could be slick based on the snow and/or freezing rain moving into the area tomorrow morning and lasting into Sunday. Plus ya never know with the winds in the Meadowlands. Eagles kicker David Akers, one of the best, is only 11-22 in FG attempts at Giants Stadium.

Tough pick here, we were thinking 23-20 Giants, but that would mean they wouldn't cover the 4 point spread. So we will go Giants -4 Prediction: Giants 24-19

Panthers -9.5 vs. Cardinals
Even with a quick strike offense, we don't see the Cardinals putting up much of a fight in this game. The Panthers are an experienced team with a devastating running game.
Prediction: Panthers 31 Cardinals 13

Ravens -3 at Titans
The Ravens are playing very good football right now and even though the Titans had a fantastic season, we still don't totally trust Kerry Collins. Especially against the Ravens. This one comes down to the kickers, both of which are good, with Matt Stover kicking the game winning FG late in the 4th.
Prediction: Ravens 16 Titans 13

Steelers -6 vs. Chargers
No Ladainian Tomlinson will put extra pressure on Darren Sproles. Chargers will have to adapt to frigid conditions. Steelers have too many pluses and experience to lose this one, setting up a black and blue match up with the Ravens in the AFC title game.
Prediction: Steelers 27 Chargers 16

Another snow storm on the way tomorrow. The grass still a frozen tundra from Wednesday's ice storm. Oh to be in Florida and warm. Yankees Spring Training tickets went on sale today. How nice would it be to go watch the workouts, get some autographs, and soak up the sun (Had to use that line as Sheryl Crow was just singing it on Pandora radio).

Breaking News: Hoffman Agrees to Terms with Brewers

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is reporting that the all-time saves leader, Trevor Hoffman, has come to terms with the Brewers on a 1 year, $6 million contract. It's possible a second year, either guaranteed or an option, could be added to the deal.

Hoffman has spent his entire 16 year career with the Padres, compiling 554 saves.

Pettitte Unhappy With Negotiations

Ken Davidoff of Newsday is reporting that Andy Pettitte is unhappy about how negotiations have transpired with the Yankees and may be re-thinking returning to the Houston Astros. Negotiations are still on going though as both sides seem to want to come to a resolution.

Pettitte's issues are three fold, and not unexpected:

1. Show me some appreciation. Sorry, Andy this worked last time, as so eloquently illustrated by Mrs. MM yesterday, but doesn't fly this time.

2. The Yankees aren't hurting for more based on the contracts recently handed out. It's a valid point, bu that's not the reason for the cut.

3. He thinks his 2008 season was not as bad as the Yankees are making it out to be. You get props for pitching while hurt, but you were pretty mediocre overall.

Davidoff also confirms that the Yankees are looking to deal Xavier Nady, to lower salary.Nady has one year remaining prior to free agency. To us it makes no sense to trade him. Play him, offer him arbitration after the season, and get the draft pick(s). The Yankees have also gotten calls about Nick Swisher, but the 3 years left on his contract could make him a less desirable target.

Red Sox Looks to Build Depth

Peter Gammons reports that the Red Sox are close to signing Rocco Baldelli. The added right-handed bat will also give the Sox more depth in the outfield.

The Boston Globe has now chimed in the John Smoltz situation and also feels the Sox are close to inking him to a 1 year, $5.5 million deal.

UPDATE 2:33 EST 1/8 - It's official, the Red Sox have brought in Rhode Island native Rocco Baldelli. The former Ray is believe have received a minimal amount of guaranteed money with large incentive clauses.

It's time for the Shelley Duncan fan club to move on. The Yankees energetic bohemoth was released to make room on the 40 man roster for MarkTeixeira. Duncan burst on to the scene in '07 after a long siege in the minor leagues, giving the Yankees some pop from the right side, some major, arm bashing, and plenty of positive attitude. Unfortunately, that didn't translate to a good 2008 when Duncan had only 57 at-bats.

Deal or No Deal?
J on Heyman is reporting that the Yankees are fielding offers for Xavier Nady, Nick Swisher, and possibly Hideki Matsui. We know there's a glut, but Nady?

Please don't ever allow him in Yankee Stadium
The Yankees announced the other day that they had signed veteran pitcher Jason Johnson to a minor league deal.

Yogi Berroa?
The Yankees have also brought in former AL Rookie of the Year, beating out Hideki Matsui, Angel Berroa to possibly back up Derek Jeter and serve as a utility infielder. Berroa put together 3 moderate to good seasons, including that rookie campaign, for the Royals. But he struggled the last 3 years, spending some of it in the minors. He played just 84 games for the Dodgers last season after being acquired from the Royals in June.

J-Rod is Back
The Yankees have re-signed former prospect John Rodriguez to a minor league deal. The lesser known Rodriguez spent the last 3 seasons with the Indians and Cardinals.

No Pepsi, Coke
Sam Borden, filling in for Peter Abraham, reports that Phil Coke has been told he'll come to Spring Training as a starter. PeteAbe also posted a story and some photos from the Yankees recent clinic in Taiwan.

Show the Mayor the Money
NYC has decided not to have luxury suites at either of the new stadiums being built in New York, but will take the money for them.

Maybe it will melt the ice from the frozen tundra we had formed by freezing rain overnight. Don't worry with Carl Pavano and Jason Giambi off the market, there's still plenty of big names left out there.

The all-time saves leader, Trevor Hoffman, has been offered similar one year deals by both the Brewers and Dodgers. Jon Heyman believes the Brewers have made a stronger push.

Heyman was on with Mike Francesa yesterday and had some guestimates as to where some of the remaining free agents would end up.

Manny Ramirez - Dodgers reportedly made a 2 year, $45 million offer and aren't likely to increase it. Heyman still thinks another team will jump in.

Adam Dunn - Nationals; teams aren't willing to throw big money at him.

Ben Sheets - Rangers

Bobby Abreu - Still a good possibility of him going to Oakland. We think he could end up with the Angels.

The Rangers are reportedly checking out the medical records on free agent third baseman Joe Crede. Pitcher John Patterson has decided to retire at age 30 due to persistent arm problems.

Ken Rosenthal says the Diamondbacks made an offer to free agent pitcher Jon Garland, but are no longer pursuing him. K-Ros points to Pat Burrell's ($8 mill per year) new contract to show just how difficult it is for the Mets to deal Luis Castillo and his $6.25 mill per year. Like a lot of us, K-Ros also doesn't understand the Angels lack of maneuvering.

According to the Boston Herald, the Red Sox are targeting John Smoltz for the rotation. Of course, most of what is said in the Herald isn't true.

Don't cringe Mets fans, but the Mets have reportedly made an offer to Tim Redding.

You Can Go Home Again

Especially if your name is Jason Giambi. The former leader of the Oakland A's playoff teams of 2000-2001 has re-signed with the A's after 7 years in New York. Giambi passed his physical, enabling him to put his John Hancock on a 1 year, $5.25 million contract to play for Oakland.

Giambi built his reputation as a slugger, and steroid user, while averaging 35 home runs and 122 RBI from 1998-2001. He won the AL MVP Award his last season in the Bay area before bolting to the Yankees for 7 years and $120 million.

His time in New York was a mixed bag of home runs, walks, strikeouts, injuries, golden thongs, and of course, the steroid scandal. While he screwed up, he still had the backing of his teammates, most notably the Yankees captain, Derek Jeter, and was well liked by the fans and media.

Andy, We Hardly Know Ye

Today we have a very special post, from a very special woman...my wife. Mrs. MM puts in her 2 cents on Andy Pettitte's future in or out of NY.

What the heck happened to the home grown, stand-up guy with the "aw, shucks" humble attitude and a boat load of talent?

After weeks of foot dragging, Andy Pettite has finally made a public decision to reject the Yankees' offer of $10 million to pitch for them for 2009. In my mind, if he indeed walks away, he just went from a talented, if flawed, guy who had the good fortune to have been part of a successful dynasty and could have proudly wrapped up a great career and rode into the sunset to acclaim... to a chump. Now he is just like every other greedy sports figure who shamelessly and publicly does a money grab first, and considers how it affects his reputation later. In this case, that's a huge mistake.

How did this evolve? Well, first a little history on the subject...
Pettite came up through the Yankees farm system and eased his way in as a big left-hander from Texas with lots of guts and heart for the game. He paid his dues and when opportunity struck to hit the majors, he did so with humility and spirit. He became known as a leader in the clubhouse, an affable guy, and one who gave his all to win and for his teammates. Off the field, he was a family man and a devout Christian. That, plus being known as a reliable pitcher with one of the most effective pick-off moves in all of major league baseball.

He was the real deal, and his consistency and tenacity garnered everyone's respect and earned him 4 World Series championship rings as an integral part of 4 outstanding Yankee teams.

In 2001, Pettite had gotten killed in Game 6 of the World Series against the Diamondbacks, (and then we all know about how Game 7 ended). Then, after losing the 2003 World Series, in which Pettitte turned in a star performance, Yankees brass knew that it was time to re-tool a bit. They spent the off-season jockeying for players with some additional offense to offer, and landed Kenny Lofton, Tony Womack and one of the "big fish" that year- Gary Sheffield. With their attention turned elsewhere, the powers-that-be in Tampa (G. Steinbrenner, Randy Levine, et al) neglected to recognize the value of their coveted veteran lefty pitcher. During that final year of his contract, they didn't dangle the possibility of a lucrative contact extension.

Distracted by other holes in the leaky boat, the Yankees didn't show Pettitte the respect that he had certainly earned in all of his successful years of service. Instead, at the eleventh hour, they contacted him about a new contract. It was a fair contract that offered a generous salary, but the timing made it seem like an afterthought. So, feeling overlooked and dissed, Andy walked. And they let him go. "It isn't the money", he said at the time. It was the principle. So he took the road back to Houston. He accepted less money in exchange for recognition and respect. And the bonus was the chance to be around home more with his kids, and where he could help to shape the up and coming younger Astros players with the counsel of a seasoned veteran. By and large, Yankees fans understood the logic of Pettite's decision. He had been overlooked by Yankees management and the decision had to do more with his requirement of being treated with respect than anything money could buy. Who could argue with that?

Pettite gave 3 years of service to Houston, sharing the Astros' rotation with fellow Texan, ex-Yankee, friend, and workout partner Roger Clemens. And from 2004-2006, the Yankees struggled to fill the hole left in the wake of Pettite's departure. Kevin Brown couldn't begin to fill those shoes nor could anyone else. So following the 3-year stint and elbow surgery in Houston, Mr. Home Grown returned to New York and was warmly welcomed back by Yankees fans in 2007. He spent the first year back reminding fans of what they'd missed. He got over his snit of having been ignored, and the move implied that he had returned for his love of the game and recognition of all the good memories that he had made on his way up to the majors and his respect for the specialness that is the Yankee legend. He was part of that elite group that had been the heart of the team for years: Jeter, Mo, Posada, and Pettite. You got the feeling that this was where he wanted to play and where he wanted to wrap up his career.

But then the whole steroid mess began to unfold in 2007-2008 and Pettite's solid reputation was rocked by scandal. Bam! Roger Clemens slinked away under a veil of suspicion, and despite all protests to the contrary, he looked like a selfish, guilty fool. And out trickled a nasty little sidelight: Pettite had used HGH, too. You might just as well have read that there was no tooth fairy. It made all of us wonder about the myth we had bought into regarding Pettite as a man of character who you could expect to uphold principle and do the right thing. The same guy who we would smile at because he was a man with such a great sense of decency that when he got frustrated with his performance during a game you could often witness him screaming obscenities into his glove rather than let anyone else see or hear him do it. The same guy.

So what did this stand-up guy do when faced with the white light of scrutiny in the press and under oath at a Congressional hearing? He came clean about his steroid use. Sorta. Eventually. When he had no other choice. He distanced himself from Clemens, claiming that their friendship was never as close as we had thought. He involved his wife, Laura, in his affidavits, as if throwing her under the bus with her testimony would somehow corroborate his assertion that he only used illegal substances to heal an injured arm and return to his team. Except that he eventually admitted that wasn't really the whole truth. But, we bought it. Because we wanted to believe in him.

And Yankees management backed him. Because they needed to. And because of his prior reputation, he kind of got a pass on the whole ugly mess in the court of public opinion. But even if what he said was true, is intention a sound defense when lies were told knowingly and the law was broken?

Then the disappointing 2008 season came and went. Plagued all season with injuries and bad pitching, the pitching staff was in shambles and Pettitte contemplated the 2009 season. The Yankees knew they had shuffling and trading and rebuilding to do and they needed to have a solid rotation to put on the field in the new Yankee Stadium. Knowing they would likely only need one of their veterans, Mussina or Pettitte, Moose made their choice easy by retiring on an up note, with class and dignity. And that left Pettite.

A 1-year contract was offered to Pettitte. Maybe not a stellar contract compared to the deal that CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett got, but one that would keep him in New York and allow him to pitch for the team he said he loved. And $10 million is nothing to sneeze at. The team he said he wanted to pitch for at the new stadium. And the one that stood behind him just the year before as he squirmed uncomfortably at that press conference where he had to stand up and explain his steroid usage (with his loyal buds Jeter, Mo, and Posada lending their unwavering moral support from the front row).

And instead of taking the offer, this man of principle who we believed in and whose faults we forgave and who we stood behind..... is ready to walk away again. But this time for selfish reasons: money. It is just mind boggling that after all this time with all his millions and all of his so-called principles, he's no better than any other bottom feeder. And so careless with his once carefully crafted reputation. What a shame.

In an era where people love to build up and tear down their heroes, here is one great athlete who doesn't need tearing down. Pettite is doing a fine job of it all by himself.

Mitre Suspended for 50

The Yankees signed right-hander Sergio Mitre back in November with the hopes he could help them in the future. The 27-yr old, who has pitched for the Cubs and Marlins, is coming off of Tommy John surgery and probably wouldn't be ready to return to the mound until July. But that is probably going to change now.

Mitre has been suspended 50 games for violating the league's drug policy.

Mitre told ESPN.com that while he takes "full responsibility" for his actions, he failed a drug test because a trace amount of androstenedione appeared without his knowledge in a nutritional supplement that he bought at GNC. "Although being suspended for 50 games is tough to accept, I think that it is important to understand that I am in full support of drug testing in baseball," Mitre said in a statement released through his agent, Paul Cobbe. "I did take the supplement in question and accept full responsibility for taking it. What has been difficult for me to understand is that I legally purchased this supplement at GNC and had no intention nor desire to cheat or to circumvent the system in any way. "As confirmed through the drug testing and grievance processes, it contained a 'contaminant' amount of an illegal, performance-enhancing drug. This was not listed as an ingredient on the packaging, should not have been in the supplement and certainly should not have been available for legal purchase at a store."

Mitre will serve the suspension once he's activated from the DL.

Phillies reliever J.C. Romero, a member of the championship Phillies, is also to receive a 50 game suspension.

Pettitte Says No No No

Andy Pettitte may be saying he wants to remain a Yankee, but his actions haven't matched his words. Tyler Kepner of the Times last night reported that Pettitte officially rejected the Yankees' 1 year, $10 million offer. That means there is no offer on the table and Pettitte's time with the Yankees is coming closer to ending.

Apparently our open letter didn't do the trick.

The Yankees are finally introducing Mark Teixeira to the Big Apple today with a press conference at 1 pm EST. The event will be held in the Stadium's Sony Club and can be seen on Yankees.com.

#23 is out of the question, so maybe he'll don the #25 he wore in Anaheim and was recently vacated by Jason Giambi. (Thong sold separately).

Bradley, Burell off the Market

You can scratch the names Milton Bradley and Pat Burrell off of the free agent player list. Earlier today, Burrell, as reported by Ken Rosenthal, agreed to a 2 year, $16 million deal with the Tampa Rays. Then later this evening, ESPN.com reported that Bradley had reached an agreement with the Cubs on a 3 year, $30 million pact.

Burrell has played his entire 9-year career in Philadelphia, and helped the Phillies to a World Series championship this past season with 33 home runs and 86 RBI. He averaged 28 home runs a season, only once hitting below 20 in a single year.

Bradley has been much traveled due to his attitude and demeanor, but never his play. He's coming off a stellar season in Texas where he hit .321-22-77 in 414 at-bats, made the All-Star team, and got along well with manager Ron Washington, whom he referred to as a father figure. The Cubs will be his 7th team in 10 seasons.

Is Mark Teixeira really a Yankee? The way things have been kept under wraps you have to wonder. But according to the Daily News' Anthony McCarron, Tex may finally be shown off to the public this Tuesday. Teixeira's Dad played high school ball with one Bucky Dent.

McCarron's "teammate" Roger Rubin is looking for MLB to help get players like Chien-Ming Wang to give more than a few grunts in interviews. Wang is one of a number of players who, rather than using an interpreter, doesn't offer much or shies away from the press. We've said ourselves we would like to hear The Wanger on some post-game shows.

The Wanger will be part of a Yankees clinic in Taiwan this week.

The NY Post's Kevin Kernan thinks the Yankees should bring in Oliver Perez to fill the number 5 spot in the rotation. Then again, this is the guy who though the Yankees should sign Mets failure Scot Schoenweis 2 years ago.

We watched part of Don Larsen's perfect game again on the MLB Network yesterday. Earlier there was also a piece on Christy Mathewson. In both cases, Bob Costas was involved. Bob is great, or was great (now very good), but must he be involved with everything baseball related?

The Yankees are still looking for more city money for the new Stadium.

NFL Wild Card Weekend - Sunday

We're going to try to bounce back from our horrendous Saturday showing with today's pair of games.

Ravens at Dolphins
First up is the AFC match up between the physical Baltimore Ravens and the throw everything at you Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins, of course, were one of the biggest stories in the NFL this season. They picked up Chad Pennington in the off-season to steer their rudderless ship. But using some creative offense, coach Tony Sparano turned a 1-15 team into a 10-6 division winner. Today'aame will be far from easy though against the run stuffing Ravens.

Chad Pennington, much maligned in New York, turnedain an MVP like season, throwing for over 3,600 yards and posting a 97.4 passer rating. Ronnie Brown was the key man in the Dolphins oft-used Wildcat formation. No game highlighted Brown's value more than his 113 rushing performance in a 38-13 blow out of the Patriots on September 21. In addition to rushing for 4 touchdowns out of the Wildcat formation, Brown threw a touchdown pass as well.

The Dolphins 'D' has been effective stopping the run, but they're 25th in the league in defending the pass. But the underrated squad did help lead the Dolphins to a league best +17 turnover ratio. The Ravens have to look out for a rejuvenated Joey Porter, who posted a team high 18 sacks during the regular season.

Like the Falcons, the Ravens got a big infusion of life from a rookie QB. Outsiders didn't expect much from Jersey's Joe Flacco, but the first year player emerged as a budding star in the AFC. The University Delaware product threw for 2,971 yards and completed 60% of his passes. He was helped by a 3-headed running game lead by Le'Ron McClain. Along with Ray Rice and Willis McGahee, the trio combined for over 2,000 yards rushing.

Derek Mason was Flacco's biggest target, catching 80 balls for 1,037 yards and 5 touchdowns. Flacco also has the dangerous Mark Clayton and the very solid Todd Heap to throw to.

The defense, of course, is led by stars Ray Lewis and Ed Reed. Lewis may not be the player he once was, but he's still the spiritual leader of the squad. And of course there's former rookie defensive player of the year, Terrell Suggs, who leads the team with 8 sacks. The Ravens are equally adept at stuffing the run and defending the pass.

The two teams met in week 7 with the Ravens riding two second quarter touchdowns to a 27-13 victory. They come in as 3.5 point favorites today. With their mix of defense and experience, the Dolphins have their work cut out for them.

Eagles at Vikings
The NFC game pits the number 3 seed, the NFC North winning Minnesota Vikings against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles are the lowest seed, but maybe most dangerous team, in the NFC.

Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook are the two biggest keys to how the Eagles will fare today. McNabb has had an up and down season, but just as appeared the Eagles were finished he led them to a playoff berth as the Eagles destroyed the Cowboys in the season finale. McNabb's inconsistency mirrored that of the entire team. The Eagles could only manage a 13-13 tie with lowly Cincinnati and lost 10-3 to the Redskins in week 16. But around that, they beat fellow playoff teams Arizona and the Giants. They also beat the Falcons and Steelers earlier in the season.

Westbrook is the prototypical all purpose back, compiling 936 yards rushing and 402 yards receiving on 54 catches. He scored 14 touchdowns while turning the ball over just once.

The Eagles defense is well documented under longtime coordinator Jim Johnson. Hard nosed (we'll add dirty as will Ike Hilliard) safety Brian Dawkins is the team leader. Defensive end Darren Howard had a team high 10 sacks. Philly's special teams also do a good job.

The biggest downside to Philly's game could be coach Andy Reid's habit of calling conservative plays in big situations.

The Vikings season lives and breaths on the backs of star running back Adrian Peterson and their defensive line, which helped the team to a league best run defense. That being said, the key to this game will be the play of third year quarterback Tarvaris Jackson. The Alabama State product was benched after ineffective play the first two weeks of the season, but returned in week 14 when start Gus Frerotte went down with an injury (no, he didn't head butt a wall this time). Since then Jackson has been hot, including throwing 4 TD's against the Cardinals.

There be less pressure on Jackson, if Peterson has a big day. A.P. ran for a league best 1,760 yards and scored 10 touchdowns. Coach Brad Childress isn't afraid to go to Chester Taylor in goal line situations. Peterson who lost 9 fumbles during the year, must hold on to the football.

The Vikings defense is lead by the Williamses, Kevin and Pat, who stuff the run, while end Jared Allen recorded 14 sacks. The Vikings special teams have allowed 4 punt returns for touchdowns.

We think the experienced QB wins out on this one with the help of the running back who doesn't fumble. Peterson will get his yards, but Jackson will succumb to the Eagles vaunted pass rush.

We stink...we took both road teams and came out on the short end in both games.

The Falcons couldn't stop the Cardinals big play offense and the Cards went against their playbook and established the running game. Rookie Matt Ryan made some definite rookie mistakes and the Cards took it 30-24.

The AFC match up between the Chargers and Colts was very entertaining and went to overtime before running back Darren Sproles ran for a game winning touchdown. Sproles got the chance to shin before a national audience due to a first half groin injury by LaDainian Tomlinson.

The 5'6" 181 pound powder keg rushed for 102 yards and 2 touchdowns and showed no after effects of a lost fumble earlier in the game. Sproles also caught 5 passes for 45 yards, had 106 return yards on kickoffs and averaged 24 yards on 3 punt returns.

The Bolts take it, 23-17.

NFL Wild Card Weekend - Saturday

It seems like it was just week one of the NFL season, but the playoffs have arrived this weekend with the lower seeded division winners facing off against each other and wild card entries.

Falcons at Cardinals

It seems like the Falcons were just in the midst of the whole Michael Vick-Bobby Petrino nightmare. Then along came Mike Smith and Matt Ryan, an 11-5 record and a playoff berth. In fact, the Falcons nearly won the NFC South, finishing a game behind the Carolina Panthers.

Ryan was the AP Offensive Player of the Year after throwing for 3,440 yards and 16 TDs, while compiling an 87.7 passer rating and completing over 61% of his passes. But while Ryan gets most of the accolades, this offense really belongs to Michael Turner, who exploded in a full-time role after a tutelage under LaDainian Tomlinson in San Diego.

Turner carried the ball 376 times, nearly 150 more times than his 4 combined seasons on the west coast. He rushed for 1,699 yards and 17 touchdowns, and surpassed the 200 yard mark in the first and last games of the season.

This is just the 4th playoff appearance for the Falcons in the last 25 years. The Cardinals haven't had much success either, especially since moving to Arizona. In fact, this is their first playoff appearance since the 1998 season, which was also the last time they finished above .500.

While the Cardinals can pass the ball with anyone, they're about as flawed as a team can be. World beaters one day, allowing 56 points to the Jets on another day. Kurt Warner threw for over 4,500 yards and 30 touchdowns, but put defensive pressure on him and Warner is likely to cough up the football. Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin are dangerous weapons, so the Falcons must keep up a pass rush on Warner or they're dead.

The defensive numbers between the two teams are very similar, both giving up around 220 yards through the air. But while the Falcons have +3 turnover ratio, the Cardinals have given up the football as many times as they've taken it away.

We've seen this spread range from each team being favored by 1 to the game being a pick 'em, which is the current line on Football Locks, which is the site we've used all season.

Colts at Chargers

The second Saturday game matches two of the hottest teams in the AFC. Some bad breaks combined with bad play put the Chargers at 4-8 after 12 games. But they won their last 4 including a winner take all/justice is done game against the Broncos in the season's final week of the season.

The biggest problem for the Chargers tonight could be injuries. Both LaDainian Tomlinson (toe) and Tight End Antonio Gates (high ankle sprain) are questionable. It will be a big blow to the offense if one or both miss the game. Should LT2 (sorry, there's only one LT) be out of action, more pressure will fall on the Chargers' little fireplug Darren Sproles, who had 672 yards rushing and receiving. It also could hurt the Chargers' special teams, where Sproles handles the bulk of punt and kick returns. Norv Turner might have to move him off those duties to lessen the chance of injury.

Had their Chargers finished better than .500, their QB could certainly have been the MVP. Phillip Rivers threw for 4002 yards, 34 TDS, 11 picks, and compiled a 105.5 passer rating. He's developed into one of the best on field leaders in the game.

The Colts are on a roll coming into the playoffs. Led by, now, 3 time MVP Peyton Manning, the Colts won their last 9 games in a row after a slow start caused by injuries and ineffectiveness. The Colts lack of a running game, they ranked 31st in the NFL, could definitely hurt them, but injuries to Joseph Addai is one of the reasons the Colts couldn't run as much either.

Manning garnered the MVP with 4,002 yards passing, 27 TD, 12 picks, and a 95 passer rating. Reggie Wayne has been Manning's biggest target, catching 82 balls for 1,145. But the touchdowns have been spread around amongst all of the eligible pass catchers. The Colts will be without their starting left guard Mike Pollak and back up center Jamey Richard.

The Colts biggest problem has been stopping the run, allowing 122 yards a game. But the Chargers problem has been stopping the pass (31st) and this is NOT the QB you want to be facing when you have that problem.

This game is a pick 'em, because of the uncertainty of the Chargers two stars, but the Bolts problem stopping the pass will be the much bigger issue here.

New Year Hot Stove

It's a new year and time for the first hot stove report of the new year. It also means nearly two months have gone by since players filed for free agency and there are still big names to be had. Manny Ramirez, Adam Dunn, Derek Lowe, Bobby Abreu, Trevor Hoffman, and Ken Griffey Jr. are just some of the players still looking for work.

Needless to say Lowe was not impressed by the Mets' 3-year, $36 mill offer.

Crosstown
Last off-season, Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts had to listen to continuous rumors about his pending departure to the Chicago Cubs. Now MASN (Mid-Atlantic Sports Network) reports that Orioles are talking to the Chicago White Sox about Roberts' availability. Gavin Floyd's name has been mentioned, though we don't understand trading a 17-game winner when winning is all about pitching.

Don't Let the Door Hit You....
Jon Heyman is reporting that the Dodgers and outfielder Andruw Jones are working to restructure the Curacao native's deal to allow them to move him to another team. Jones would be agreeing to defer half of the $20 million remaining on his contract. Seems like everyone except Ned Colletti knew the Dodgers should give Jones his contract. The restructure would also free up money to help try to resign Manny Ramirez.

Top Cat
Tony Clark has agreed to a 1-year, $800,000 deal that will keep him in Arizona, his baseball home since 2005.

Giants Among Men
The Giants were reportedly quietly looking into signing Manny Ramirez, but then shot down those rumors (or was that a ploy?). Now, according to Heyman, they're taking a look at the medical records of White Sox 3rd baseman Joe Crede to possibly fill their hot corner needs. It's been all downhill for the Giants since they signed Barry Zito. Bonds Karma perhaps?

Please Don't Follow me, Joe
Scott Proctor has escaped the clutches of Joe Torre for the second time, agreeing to a one year deal with the Marlins. Proctor had been non-tendered by the Dodgers.

Moor or Less
Former player Jeff Moorad can now add former Diamondbacks head honcho to his resume. Moorad resigned in order to pursue purchasing the Padres.

No Kidding?
Twins' catcher Joe Mauer has undergone minor kidney surgery (is there such a thing?) to remove an obstruction. The Minneapolis-Star Tribune reports that the situation is not serious and Mauer will be ready for Spring Training.

Old News
In case you missed it, the Angels got themselves a new closer the other day, free agent pitcher Brian Fuentes. To replace K-Rod, Fuentes was given a 2-year, $17.5 million deal. If things don't work out, Fuentes could be moved into a set up role with Scot Shields or Jose Arredondo assuming the closing duties.

Here's what's on tap this month as we are just a month and a half from pitchers and catchers reporting to Spring Training.

The new MLB Newtork premiered yesterday, kicking things off with the first showing of Don Larsen's perfect game, complete with original commercials. This month also includes the 2004 World, gag, Series, gag, this past season's series, the 1946 series between the Cards and Red Sox (you know who won that one, heh heh), the '96 Series (yessss), and more.

Jan 5-15 is the period for filing salary arbitration. In between on the 12th, this year Hall of Fame (Rickey Henderson and ?) class will be announced. The two arbitration sides exchange figures on the 19th.

Morristown Green magazine, which may or may not be affiliated with NJ.com had a sit down with Michael Kay in this month's issue. The only problem you may have is finding a copy of it.

The Baseball Assistance Team annual dinner is January 27 at New York City's Marriott Marquis. The following former players are expected to attend the dinner which is open to the public (but not a cheap night out) - Wally Backman, Jim Bouton, Orlando Cepeda, Chris Chambliss, Whitey Ford, George Foster, Steve Garvey, Bob Gibson, Cleon Jones, Al Kaline, Ed Kranepool, Lee Mazzilli, Joe Morgan, Graig Nettles, Willie Randolph, Robin Roberts, Rusty Staub, Roy White, Randy Winn.

In case you missed it yesterday, the Detroit Red Wings topped the Chicago Black Hawks 6-4 in Wrigley Field. The outdoor game in freezing temperatures was very entertaining as the two "Original Six" teams wore throwback uniforms. Hopefully the Rangers play the Bruins in the new Yankee Stadium. It would be awesome.

Another year gone by. We hope this past year has been a good one for you and your family and friends, and we hope that 2009 will be even better.

We've been so busy lately that we forgot to wish ourselves a Happy 3rd Anniversary for My Pinstripes. As we begin our 4th year, we hope we continue to bring you newsworthy info as well as have some fun too.

We plan on a redesign of the site, which is starting to look a little amateurish after 3 years (actually we are amateurs, but...). This year we branched out Facebook and we will continue for new ways to get info to you.

Top 10 of 2008

These are top 10 Yankees stories for the year MMVIII (it's not just used for Super Bowls ya know). We could have ordered 7-10 differently, but this is what we came up with.

1. Goodbye, old friend
There's no question that the number one story was the final season in the storied Yankee Stadium that we all grew up with. Yes, there have been different manifestations of the current park, but the games were all played on the same hallowed ground.

The Yankees did a pretty great job, (player replicas not withstanding), of commemorating the year with patches on their uniforms, a somewhat cheesy Stadium countdown meter, a spectacular Old Timer's Day, and a great final night ceremony.

As for the final game itself, the Yankees won 7-3. Andy Pettitte picked up what could be his final win in a Yankees uniform. Derek Jeter gave a heartfelt speech to the crowd after the game and the Yankees took a farewell lap around the Stadium.

The new place will be great, but we'll miss the old one too.

2. I'm in Charge Here
With his health not what it once was, George Steinbrenner turned over the day-to-day operations of the ball club to his sons, Hank and Hal. Hank emerged as the mouthpiece, often shooting from the hip without thinking, but as the year progressed, it became obvious that Hal was the son who was really running the show.

3. Show me the money!
This holiday season was, hopefully, highlighted by the gifts that keep on giving. The Yankees played Santa Claus for CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and Mark Teixeira, giving them contracts that will help them to form the nucleus of the ball club for years to come.

4. Seeing Stars
The Yankees hosted their first All-Star game in 31 years on July 15. Mariano Rivera recorded the final outs of the 9th inning, but it took extra innings before the AL won. The big story, though, was Josh Hamilton's incredible display in the prior night's home run derby.

5. A Different Joe
It was a new year all around, as Joe Girardi became the first manager other than Joe Torre to take the helm of the Yankees since 1995. Girardi had his ups and downs. He admittedly made a number of mistakes, particularly in his reporting of team injuries to the press and his lack of rapport with the veterans on the team.

6. A Big Loss
Bigger than any game, was the loss of long-time Yankees player and broadcaster Bobby Murcer to brain cancer. Bobby was our man growing up, and proved to be an even better person off the field than on. His courage during his illness was inspiring.

7. Bernie Comes Home
After being disappointed by not being offered a guaranteed contract for 2007, Bernie Williams disappeared from sight. He still showed up at various fund raisers from time to time, but he was nowhere to be found when it came to anything basebal-l related.

But that all changed on September 22, when as part of the pre-game hoopla for the final Stadium contest, Bernie Williams emerged, in uniform, from the dugout to a raucous reception from the crowd.

8. Big Trouble for American League Hitters
It took Mike Mussina 18 seasons and it came down to the final game of 2008, but Moose finally got his first 20-win season. Defeating the Red Sox in Fenway Park, Moose finished off a renaissance year that turned out to be his last. It took him a while to make the official announcement, but Moose had already decided this season would be his last before the season had even started.

9. CashMoney
Brian Cashman said he wanted to be back. The Steinbrenner boys said they wanted him back. But the Yankees played the entire season with a lame duck GM. Then on the final day of the season, Cashman signed a new 3-year deal that will keep him on as GM through 2011.

10. Voiceless
The final season in Yankee Stadium was not the same, because its longtime voice was not there. Bob Sheppard had taken ill at the end of the 2007 season and was too weak to work any of the Yankees games in 2008. He did make a pre-recorded announcement for the final home game and Derek Jeter used a tape of the "Voice of God" to announce all of his at-bats. Here's hoping Mr. Sheppard returns in 2009.

Dear Andy

An open letter to Andy Pettitte from someone very close to him.

Dear Andy,

It's been a while since we had a good talk, but I think now is the time for me to step up and remind you of a few things. You're in a quandary right now. You want to play for the Yankees, but you don't want to take a pay cut to come back.

But let me ask you something: How do you want to be remembered, not just by Yankees fans, but by baseball fans and the media, and even your opponents?

As a solid, sometimes spectacular left-hander who helped the Yankees to 4 World Series championships and 2 other World Series appearances?

Or, would you prefer to be thought of as a guy who cheated? No matter how good your intentions might have been, you still cheated. A guy who lied about how many times he used HGH? For all we know you could still be lying about that.

A player who ended his time in Pinstripes because he wouldn't take a pay cut? And let me remind you, it's a pay cut to $10 million, not a-buck-fifty. Yes, CC and A.J. are making big bucks and they never wore the uniform. But they are still in the relatively early stages of their careers, while you're on the other end of the spectrum.

And what about loyalty? You want the Yankees to be loyal to you, but where is some reciprocation? The Steinbrenners have been very good to you. Yes, there was the "not enough love shown" after the 2003 season; we'll give you that. But you did all right over the 9 years prior to that, and in the 2 years since you came back. And you weren't exactly stellar this past season, injuries or not.

Jorge, Mo, Derek...they were all there for you last Spring Training, standing by your side as you 'fessed up. How about showing a little loyalty back? You embarrassed the ball club. If anything, you owe the Yankees something.

Let's face it, you don't need the money. You have more than enough. Remember your good buddy Paul O'Neill? He took $6 million to play his last year in 2001. He could have gone anywhere and made much more money. But he wanted to finish his career as a Yankee. You keep saying you do, but your actions don't match your words.

Am I being tough on you? Maybe. But that's my job.

7 at-bats is all it took for Bernie Williams' winter ball comeback to come to an end. Bern Baby Bernie injured a quad muscle while playing for Carolina in the Puerto Rican winter league and may not be able to represent his country in next year's World Baseball Classic (aka a waste of time).

Peter Abraham of the Journal News reports though that Bernie is enrolled in school to further his music education and has a record coming out in 2009.

In the meantime, enjoy Bernie playing with the Allman Bros. back in '07.

Late Night Hot Stove with Conan O'Brien

Not too High for Lowe
Anyway, back to the hot stove. Jack Curry of the NY Times is reporting that the Mets have made an offer to Derek Lowe for $36 million over 3 years. Lowe has reportedly been looking for 5-year deal, in the neighborhood of $90 million. We've never thought much of Lowe, but after seeing what A.J. Burnett got, you can understand him wanting a similar deal.

We doubt that the Mets get Lowe with those years and that annual salary.

Marquis de Mediocre
The Cubs are sending starting pitcher Jason Marquis to the Rockies for former Yankees reliever Luis Vizcaino. That news according to the Denver Post, which stated the deal won't go through until next week. Marquis is one of the poster children for mediocre pitching.

Didn't You Get My Message?
Scott Boras has put in a call to the Dodgers regarding Manny Ramirez. Boras hadn't heard from GM Ned Colletti since December 10. With talks at a standstill, the Dodgers have been reportedly thinking about Bobby Abreu or Adam Dunn as other options.

Oh, Danny Boy
The Nationals have officially inked Daniel Cabrera to a 1 year, $2.6 million contract. Cabrera had been non-tendered by the Orioles.

Penny for Your Thoughts
It's not official yet, but it appears the Red Sox have added Brad Penny to their starting rotation. That would give them a first four of Josh Beckett, Dice-K, Jon Lester, and Penny. Tim Wakefield has the number five spot at the moment, with Clay Buchholz and Justin Masterson as additional options.

Penny was injured for most of 2007, finishing 6-9, 6.27. His performance came on the heels of a 16-win season in 2006. He was also a member of the world champion Marlins in 2003. He's expected to get a 1 year, $5 million deal.

The Red Sox also brought back catcher Josh Bard, whom they dealt in 2006 to get Wakefield's personal catcher, Doug Mirabelli, back from the Padres.

On the Air

The MLB Network kicks off on January 1, including a rebroadcast of Don Larsen's perfect World Series game. Network CEO Tony Pettiti tells us all about the new channel.

Hump Holiday Hot Stove

The Big Unit has found a new home to call his own. Randy Johnson agreed to a one year, $8 million deal on Friday to join the San Francisco Giants. Perhaps the Giants are hoping he can help Barry Zito suck less.

Willy Taveras has also found a new home. Taveras, who was non-tendered by the Rockies, has a new 2 year deal with the Reds.

Padres GM Kevin Towers says he'll still listen to offers for Jake Peavy, but is no longer shopping him. If so, that means the likelihood of Trevor Hoffman returning to San Diego is even less.

The Orioles have been in contact with Ivan Rodriguez and Greg Zaun as they look for a catcher to pave the way for Matt Wieters. Offers for Pudge and Jason Varitek are few and far between.

If you can believe anything Scott Boras says, the A's are interested in long time Angel Garrett Anderson. The A's have also had some preliminary discussions with former Yankee Bobby Abreu, but aren't close to a deal as of yet.

Roger Clemens' name took another blow, this time at Houston's Memorial Hermann Medical Center. The Roger Clemens Sports Institute for Medicine will no longer have the Rocket's name attached. We understand it, but at the same time Clemens donated $3 million to the hospital's pediatric wing.

Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Red Sox are close to signing free agent starter Brad Penny.

NFL Picks - Week 17

We've reached the regular season end of the line (Mrs. MM is very happy about this). Another mediocre 8-8 week leaves us at 122-113-15 for the season. And this, of course, is the toughest week to decipher. Teams are trying to make the playoffs, others can't get home soon enough. So who knows who cares and who doesn't?

The Giants have nothing to play for on this Sunday, but their opponents, the Vikings, are looking to capture the NFC North or at worst a Wildcard spot. Big Blue will rest plenty of regulars - this is nothing like the regular season finale with the Pats last year. Therefore we have to go with the Vikings despite laying 7 points. Vikings -7 Prediction: Vikings 27 Giants 13

Jets -3 vs. Dolphins
What incredible finale to the regular season - Favre vs. Pennington in a possible do or die match that no one saw coming. We actually think the Jets will bounce back from last week's snowy misery to win it. Of course, being they are the Jets, we could be completely wrong.

Bucs -13 vs. Raiders
The Bucs need a win and some help to make the playoffs. Jon Gruden will make sure the first part happens against his old nemesis.

Packers -11 vs. Lions
Part of us was thinking that the Lions would keep this close...then we had coffee and cleared our heads.

Eagles -1.5 vs. Cowboys
The Cowboys are the better team. The Eagles actually could make the playoffs with a win and a bunch of other teams losing. While the latter isn't likely, we do think they'll spoil the 'boys day, and we would love that.

Bears +3 vs. Texans
We could see the Texans winning this game to finish at .500 and match their best home record (6-2). Somehow we think Da Bears will prevail.

Panthers -2 at Saints
Panthers have a playoff spot locked up, but not the division or a bye in round one. Their defense should be able to contain Drew Brees enough and the Saints won't stop the Panthers running game.

Falcons -14 vs. Rams
Matt Ryan and Co. will do all they can to win the AFC South.

Bengals -2.5 vs Chiefs
No one cares, but Ryan Fitzpatrick and Tyler Thigpen might at least put on a pretty good show.

Jaguars +11 vs Ravens
Jags quit on the season a long time ago, but we think Jack Del Rio will get his team pumped up for this one. Ravens win, but don't cover.

Titans -3 vs. Colts
No clue how this one plays out, because we have no clue how much either side will play their starters.

Steelers -11 vs. Browns
Even if Big Ben and his fellow starters sit most of the day, this should still be a cake walk. Romeo Crennel's nightmare is almost over.

Patriots -5.5 at Bills
Buffalo may be getting all revved up to play spoiler, but it ain't happening.

Seahawks +7 at Cardinals
Cards probably win, but 'hawks are good enough and Cards are bad enough to make this close.

Redskins +3 vs. 49ers
Again, tough to call. We're not sure who'll win, but something like 17-16 sounds pretty good.

Chargers -8 vs. Broncos
At first we though the Broncos would keep it close, but the more we thought about it, the Chargers are going to blow Denver off the field to win the AFC West. Wonder if Ed Hoculi will be watching?

Around the Horn - 12/26

We hope you all enjoyed your Christmas and stuffed yourself like pigs. All part of tradition, ya know? Had the Yankees decided to have the New Year's Day NHL game, you would have seen the time lapse video at the Stadium. Instead, it's Wrigley getting the hockey treatment.

Kevin Mench, apparently tired of sitting on major league benches, has moved on to Japan. The best part about this is no longer hearing Michael Kay talk about the size of Mench's melon every time his team (Rangers, Blue Jays, Brewers) came to town. Hopefully the Yankees don't play the Hanshin Tigers this year.

A nice feature in the NY Times on Seattle's new skipper, Don Wakamatsu.

Rickey Henderson just turned 50, and since he hasn't made a comeback in the last 5 years, he'll soon be elected to Cooperstown. Hopefully, he doesn't pull out the old "I am the greatest" as part of his enshrinement speech.

The Christmas Yankeeland

For those of you celebrating Christmas, we hope you got everything you wanted and more and are sharing the day with friends and family.

The Yankees brass certainly got what they wanted this holiday season, but there's more going on than just CC, A.J., and Tex.

The Yankees, believe it or not, did get a bargain this week when they avoided arbitration by re-signing 2-time 19 game winner Chien-Ming Wang to a one year, $5 million contract. Wang matched his career high in wins in 2006 and 2007, and was 8-2 this past season before rupturing his Achilles tendon in an interleague game in Houston on June 15.

As part of his Turn 2 Foundation work, Derek Jeter hosted 500 top academic achievers in Central Park this past week.

The Yankees signed catcher Kevin Cash to a minor league deal as insurance in the event that Jorge Posada isn't ready when the season rolls around. Cash, who spent the past season in Boston as Tim Wakefield's personal knuckleball catcher, hit .225 in 142 at-bats with 3 home runs and 15 RBI.

One spoof site says the Yankees have signed Santa Claus to a long term deal, but no good will come of it. Meanwhile a NC Observer columnist doesn't like the spending spree, but understands the logic behind it. Even better is this Providence Journal article talking about how wonderful the Red Sox are with their money.

Holiday Hot Stove

My Pinstripes would like to wish a Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa, and any other holiday greeting we left out, to our loyal readers (and any newbies).

As we mentioned yesterday, we already got a great gift in the signing of Mark Teixeira. But where does that leave the rest of the market right now?

According to several sources, the Mets are deep into talks with Derek Lowe, the best starting pitcher left on the free agent market. Unable to come to an agreement with their own free agent Oliver Perez, the Mets would be wise to sign Lowe even if they have to overpay by a bit. Lowe is a much more consistent pitcher than Oliver Perez has ever been.

The Mets' current rotation consists of stud Johan Santana, John Maine, who showed a lot of wear and tear this past season, and Mike Pelfrey, who was outstanding in the second half. In addition to Lowe, the Mets should be trying to sign Ben Sheets to a 2-year deal as well unless they want to count on youngsters like Jon Niese.

Manny Being Where?
The Mets meanwhile will also not seek to sign Manny Ramirez (perhaps owner Fred Wilpon's losses in the Ponzi scheme are affecting this team more than we know) according to a team source. So where does that leave Manny?

Ramirez certainly won't be returning to Boston though the Red Sox will be looking for another bat. The Dodgers still remain the favorites to keep the "Manny being Manny" show going, but we have to think the Nationals will throw some big money out there as they are in desperate need of a crowd draw. One team we don't hear mentioned when Ramirez's name comes up is the Baltimore Orioles. Peter Angelos has always thrown money around like there's no tomorrow, and usually not in the smartest way. But if he can bring in Manny for say 3 years, it would be a great signing. Ramirez would absolutely destroy Camden Yards. He would also be able to exact vengeance on the Red Sox 19 times a year.

Who'll Don the Sox?
So where do the Red Sox turn now? Perhaps to slugging outfielder Adam Dunn. Though not the player that Teixeira is, Dunn would appeal to the Red Sox philosophy of high on-base percentage guys in the lineup. Dunn has only played 127 of his 1000 games at first base, but he could slide in there with Kevin Youkilis moving to third base. The Red Sox are concerned about Mike Lowell's hip and may try to move him, which they definitely would have done had they signed Teixeira. Youkillis meanwhile will not get a long term deal prior to spring training, according to his agent Joe Bick.

Halo there
The Angels have inserted Kendry Morales as their first baseman, for now. (Remember when Andy Phillips was "supposed" to be the Yankees regular first baseman or when Bubba Crosby was to be their regular center fielder?) We can't imagine the Angels relying on Morales to hit on a regular basis, but stranger things have happened. We also don't expect the Angels to stay out of the Manny Ramirez tug of war, even if they publicly say otherwise.

GM Tony Reagins has decided to "go with the kids" after saying the Angels would not only go after Ramirez, but wouldn't pursue Pat Burrell or Bobby Abreu either. That also means that long time Angel Garrett Anderson will have to find a new home.

Anybody Home?
There are plenty of free agents out on the market that still aren't getting big time offers. Be it the economy, the wait for the bigger names to sign, or something unforeseen, there are plenty of good bats still available to all the teams in baseball.

Abreu, Burrell, Milton Bradley, Orlando Hudson, and Dunn are the top tier bats still out there. At the next two levels you have Rocco Baldelli, who feels a change in diagnosis and meds could make him more durable, Anderson, Jim Edmonds, Jason Giambi, Jeff Kent, and Ken Griffey Jr.

The two top relievers out there are Trevor Hoffman, who we see still somehow returning to the Padres, and left-hander Brian Fuentes. The Cardinals rescinded their offer for Fuentes after feeling that Fuente's reps were jerking them around.

3rd Night of Hanukkah or Christmas Comes Early

It doesn't matter how you slice it. Whatever holiday you celebrate, you've gotten this season's big ticket items. CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and now you can add your very own Mark Teixeira. Big Tex is coming to town on the wings of an 8 year, $180 million contract. Sticker shock? Nah. Small peanuts for a big cash(ew) team.

The Washington Times had reported earlier today that there was to be a decision today on Teixeira's future. Most thought the Red Sox would be inking him to a new deal despite owner John Henry's claim that the Sox were back away. Teixeira's current team, the Angels, decided a new deal was too rich for their blood and had pulled out of the running. Fringe teams like the Nationals and Orioles were thought to have offered, or were preparing to offer, a mega-deal.

But when it came right down to it, the Yankees played it slowly and wisely (as it turns out). They figured out who the real competition for Teixeira's services were, and how much money would be involved. Then they waited for some of the players to drop out and dropped some more millions on the pile.

The Yankees now have an incredible lineup, one even stronger than the nine they wrote in every day in 2007 when they scored runs (until the playoffs) like there was no tomorrow. Buster Olney was on with ESPN radio's Max Kellerman and the two speculated that Teixeira would bat in front of Alex Rodriguez with Hideki Matsui likely to be in the 5-spot.

Why? Tex should clearly bat cleanup to serve as protection for A-Rod not the other way around. A-Rod needs someone to take the pressure off of him and Matsui, nor anyone else in the lineup, will do that.

What about the outfield and DH? The Yankees now have Johnny Damon, Xavier Nady, Melky Cabrera, Brett Gardner, Hideki Matsui, and Nick Swisher for 3 spots in the outfield and 1 spot in the lineup as DH.

The time has come to trade Hideki Matsui. We love Godzilla, and he's been an effective run producer, but his body and defense have deteriorated as has his power. If you are going to have Swisher, you might as well use him. He's not a good defender, so you can give him the bulk of at-bats at DH, throwing some time to the aging legs of Johnny Damon. We could see the Yankees waiting to deal Matsui until closer to the season opener to be sure that Jorge Posada is healthy and ready to be in the lineup every/almost every day.

Swisher can occasionally player either of three outfield positions to spot players some rest. The season could open with a Gardner/Cabrera platoon in center field. You don't need a mega-watt star at every position. Mike Cameron is definitely NOT needed or necessary. Gardner/Cabrera could battle for time in the 9-hole in the lineup. If both continued to suck, you can look elsewhere, perhaps a veteran who would come cheap via a trade.

Wow, we stunk out the joint last week and we're "fortunate" to go 6-9-1. That dropped ups to 114-105-15 . We've gotten off to a 1-0 start with the Colts win over the Jags, but these last weeks of the season are very hard to read. Speaking of hard to read, it's hard to take the temperature of the Giants right now. Big Blue has some key injuries and the Plaxico Burress mess, which has effected the offense more than we thought it would.

From looking like they had the #1 seed wrapped up, the Gints now have a tough game with the Panthers, who are tied with the Giants at 11-3. Brandon Jacobs is questionable, but right now is more probably than out. The Giants need Fred Robbins back as well to stop the Panthers running game, and Dominik Hixon to fill in for Buress. We could see thePanthers winning this, but we have to go with the Giants -3. Prediction Giants 19 Panthers 17

Cowboys -5.5 vs. Ravens
The last regular season game at Texas Stadium and the crowd and Cowboys will fired up. It will be too much for Joe Flacco and the Ravens. Too bad this game is on the NFL Network. You guys suck.

Seahawks +3.5 at Jets
Flip flopped on this one too. We're convinced the Jets will win this game, but it will come down to a field goal. This is Mike Holmgren's last home game coaching the 'hawks and we think Seattle will be amped up.

Steelers -2 at Titans
Wow, what a tough schedule the Steelers have had down the stretch. But they've come out on top and have only gotten stronger. We see them making it a long day for Kerry Collins.

Eagles -4.5 at Redskins
Eagles are on a roll and the Redskins are rolling over.

Dolphins -3.5 at Chiefs
Dolphins have been playing all close ones and they better not look ahead to the finale with the Jets.

Saints -7 at Lions
Should be a Brees.

49ers -5 vs. Rams
zzzzzzz, but Shaun Hill should have a big day.

Patriots -8.5 vs. Cardinals
Tough one. Pats blew out the hapless Raiders last week, but they've had some tough ones, and the Cards are a division leader. But as we have said before, is there a worse 1st place team than the Cardinals?

The Vikings are playing really well on the defensive side of the ball and Adrian Peterson is a monster. But the Matt Ryan and the Falcons are finding ways to win.

No reason to go with the Bills.

Yankees Going out for Some Tex-Mex?

SI's Jon Heyman is reporting that Scott Boras is now in talks with the Yankees and Angels for free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira. This comes after Red Sox owner John Henry said Boras' contract demands (notice we didn't say Teixeira's demands) were too high - believed to be $184 for 8 years.

The Angels were previously thought to bid $165, but are probably willing to up the ante. The Yankees, meanwhile, were thought to be debating whether to go after Teixeira or Manny Ramirez. (You know where we stand on that topic).

The Yankees may be waiting for the final numbers to fall into place before coming in with a big bid like they did with Johnny Damon prior to the 2006 season. Just keep Mike Cameron out of My Pinstripes.

RIP Dock Ellis

Former Yankees pitcher Dock Ellis has passed away at the age of 63. Ellis made his mark as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates and was a member of the 1976 Yankees, helping them return to the post-season for what was the first time since 1964. Ellis had been suffering from liver disease and was in failing health for the past year. He died at the UCLA medical center on Friday.

Dock was one of baseball's most colorful characters. He claimed to have been under the influence of LSD when he pitched an 8-walk, no-hitter for the Pirates at San Diego in 1970. His best season came a year later when he set career marks in wins (19), innings (226.1), and complete games (11). He was a member of the Pirates from 1968-1975, helping to lead Pittsburgh to 4 NL East titles and one World Series championship.

Prior to the 1976 season, he was part of a deal that helped shape the Yankees for years to come, being sent along with Willie Randolph and Ken Brett to the Yankees for Doc Medich. He went 17-8, 3.19 in 32 starts as the Yankees captured the AL East. Ellis picked up one victory over the Royals as the Yankees took the pennant and he was the losing pitcher in game 3 of the World Series.

After just 3 starts the following season, the outspoken, hard-living Ellis was dealt to the A's for Mike Torrez, who would become a World Series hero that season for the Yankees.

In 1986, the Yankees hired Ellis to speak to their minor leaguers about the evils of alcohol and drug addiction. He continued his advocacy work through the rest of life. He is survived by his wife, Hjordis.

RIP Dock.

Sox: We're not Competing on Tex

Whether he's to be believed or not, Red Sox CEO John Henry said that if it comes down to money, his team will not be able to compete for free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira. After meeting with Teixeira and his agent Scott Boras last night, Henry said, "We met with Mr. Teixeira and were very much impressed with him. After hearing about his other offers, however, it seems clear that we are not going to be a factor."

Of course you can't believe everything you hear/say, especially from a team owner. The Angels, Nationals, and Orioles are all ready to pony up big money, so don't feel too bad for Tex if the Sox don't come through.

Red Sox Nearing Deal with Big Tex?

The rumors first came from a Boston TV station and now others are chiming in. Boston's front office is in the state of Texas with Mark Teixeira hammering out a deal with agent Scott Boras. That's right the Red Sox are close to signing the free agent first basemen.

What makes this particularly aggravating is that the Yankees never really jumped into the pool. They have never made an offer to Teixeira, despite a huge hole in the Yankees lineup. Perhaps the length of the contract - Teixeira has been receiving 8-year offers - has them spooked. Think Jason Giambi. Maybe they would rather go with a short-term solution like Manny Ramirez, who they think they can get with a 3-year deal.

Teixeira is a premier first baseman, both with the bat and the glove, and could provide long-term protection in the lineup for Alex Rodriguez (Nick Swisher won't do the trick). Mike Cameron certainly isnt' the answer for the Yankees lineup.

There's No Place Like Home

After reports circulated that Rafael Furcal was about to return to the Atlanta Braves, for whom he played shortstop from 2000-2005, Furcal decided to stay put with the LA Dodgers. The shortstop signed with the Dodgers prior to the 2006 season and is expected to ink a new 3-year deal. In response, the Braves have decided to stop doing business with Furcal's agents, The Wasserman Group.

Trot Nixon has signed a minor league deal with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Jon Heyman feels the Mets and their own free agent Oliver Perez are too far apart on money to come to terms on a new deal.

Yankees Set up Initial Meeting

CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett got their official introduction to Yankeedom this afternoon in a rather brief, boring press conference. As Mike Francesa commented afterwards on the FAN, "this could have been done on a teleconference".

Yanks PR guy Jason Zillo did an intro, followed by another intro from VP/sleaze Randy Levine, Brian Cashman's usual boring words, and some short statements and Q/A with the two guests of honor. Joe Girardi's little girl Serena also presented the two new Yankees wives with a gift.

Both sounded confident and were happy to be part of the "Yankees family". Sabathia said the Yankees were always "part of the mix" and there was no bias against the east coast. He did acknowledge though that had a western team made the offer the Yankees did, he probably would have ended up out there.

For Burnett, being in Pinstripes is "a dream come true". As for his past health problems (even joking to Warner Wolf that he didn't need to recount how many times he was on the DL), Burnett feels like he has turned a corner, and takes much better care of his arm and body than he did when he was younger.

Sabathia will wear his customary number 52 while Burnett will don number 34. Hopefully they'll make a powerful 1-2 punch in the Yankees rotation in '09.

Posada Coming Along

Jorge Posada is now throwing from 60-ft as he continues his rehab from off-season shoulder surgery. Posada threw three sets of 25 throws and felt good afterwards.

Full Time Joba

It's been an odd off-season for Joba Chamberlain. He's stupidly decided to drink and drive which led to an arrest on suspicion of DUI. (His arraignment has been rescheduled to next month.) Tuesday he received an athlete of the year award in Manhattan from...the Police Athletic League ("Isn't it ironic?")

What'chu talking 'bout Willis?

CC Sabathia's first minor league pitching coach has nothing but great things to say about his former pupil. Carl Willis, who was a teammate of Paul O'Neill's in Cincinnati, coached Sabathia in the minors as well as the big league level with the Indians.

Willis’s phrases came quickly from his home in Durham, N.C., touching on the pitcher and the person. He called Sabathia a terrific pitcher,a better teammate, a loyal person, an underrated athlete and a diligent worker. After 10 minutes, Willis apologized for being so effusive. But then Willis kept chatting like a public relations man.
“He cares about the team,” Willis said. “Not just him winning, but the team winning. That smile you see when he’s in the dugout is genuine.”

Aaron Boone, the hero of game 7 of the 2003 ALCS (and one of the goats of that year's World Series) signed a one year deal with the Houston Astros.

UPDATE 8:10 PM - WOW, did we stink out the joint today.

A decent 9-7 record in week 14 put us at 108-96-14 for the year. We're 1-0 this week having taken underdog New Orleans against Chicago in the Thursday night game.

Big doings in Big 'D' tonight as Big Blue go to Dallas for the Sunday night game. And if you've read this blog you know just how much we hate the Giants in prime time. Stressful games, bad games, some wins. Scary. Giants don't have Brandon Jacobs or Plaxigun, but the Cowboys have been in-fighting (and possibly T.O. and Jason Witten literally coming to blows) all week, at least according to Dallas papers. We still like the Giants though, especially as 3 point underdogs. Oh how we hate the 'Boys. Giants +3 Prediction: Giants 27 Cowboys 17

Jets -7.5 vs. Bills
The Jets are coming off back to back disappointing weeks, but the Bills have been pathetic for longer than that. Jet fans jump back on the bandwagon after this one.
The Jets got big time lucky in winning, but that didn't help those who sided with them on the point spread. Loss

Packers -2 vs. Jaguars
The Pack has been struggling, but the Jags quit weeks ago.
The Pack is just not a good team and it showed today. 20-16 Jags. Loss

Colts -17 vs. Lions
We hate huge spreads, but we hate the Lions more.
We certainly didn't expect the Lions to hang in there, but they did in only losing by 10. Loss

Redskins -7 at Bengals
Some (Mike Francesa) would have you believe that the Deadskins season is done. Clinton Portis went after coach Jim Zorn on the radio, the offensive line is banged up, etc.. But the Skins could still save their season and we don't trust Cincy.
We really hate when Francesa is right. Loss

49ers +6.5 at Dolphins
Miami has been getting undeserved good sized spreads. Sure they are 8-5, but for the most part they don't win by much. Same goes for today even if Frank Gore doesn't play.
Pegged this one perfectly. Unfortunately, we didn't do that too often today. Win

Seahawks -2.5 at Rams
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Looks like it was a better game than we expected and we got it right. Win

Titans -3 at Texans
With Houston's improved play this could be an entertaining one.

Along with the Giants-Cowboys, the game of the week. Black and blue football sees the Steelers continue to rise to the top of the AFC.
Just as advertised and Steelers with another come from behind win. Win

Broncos +8 at Panthers
Despite their big win over the Bucs, we're not jumping back on the Panthers bandwagon so fast. Their offense has still been erratic and the Broncos big play 'O' can keep this close. Carolina wins though.

Norv Turner's time in SD is almost over.
Chargers win, but very unimpressively. Loss

Tough one. Both teams are inconsistent. Toss of an imaginary coin.

Despite Matt Cassel grieving for the loss of his Dad, this game shouldn't be close for the Pats like last week's squeaker with Seattle.

Shat or Get off the Pot
What's on Andy Pettitte's mind this Sunday morning? He met with Brian Cashman on Thursday, presumably so Cashman could appeal to his sense of "Yankees pride". Translation, "we're not paying you $16 million. Take a pay cut or take a walk. Ben Sheets will be glad to take your place." The ball is now in Pettitte's court.

A Frickin' Winner
Belated congrats to Tony Kubek as this year's Ford Frick Award winner by the Baseball Hall of Fame. Kubek made a name for himself on the NBC weekly telecasts with Joe Garagiola, and his broadcasting work included Yankees game in the 1990s. In 1994, tired of life on the road and dissatisfied with the state of the game, the former Yankees shortstop walked away with 2 years left on his contract.

Kubek's playing career ended pretty much the same way. He retired at age 30 after 9 years in the majors. He also, unfortunately, helped turn around the 1960 World Series for the Pirates, when Bill Virdon's bad hop grounder hit him in the throat, forcing him from the game and keeping a Pittsburgh rally alive.

We were never big fans of Kubek's broadcast work, though he grew on us during his stint with the Yankees. He was never afraid to criticize the home team like some other broadcasters and we respected that.

Kubek will be honored in Cooperstown on July 26 along with former Yankees Joe Gordon, elected to the hall by the veterans committee, and Rickey Henderson, who will enter the hall as a member of the Oakland A's.

Queme a Bebé Bernie
Bernie Williams never officially retired and though he may not want to play in the majors next season, he does want to play for his native Puerto Rico. So the guitar man is headed to Puerto Rico to play winter ball for the Carolina Giants. How long before Mike Francesa says the Yankees should bring him back (about 2 seconds after campaigns AGAIN for Joba to go back to the pen)?

Rich or Poor, It's Good to Have Money

We laugh at those headlines that say the rich got richer. The rich haven't won anything in 8 years.

Mark Feinsand of the News reports that Johnny Damon and A-Rod made recruiting calls to Burnett. A-Rod promise tickets to a Madonna concert and 2 free Kaballah sessions?

Don't Let the Door Hit Ya...
Midnight Friday or is that Midnight Saturday..no 12:00 AM as it became Saturday..oh never mind. That was the deadline for non-tendering players. Not many players were let go that will have a major effect on any teams, but the Rockies let speedster Willy Taveras go and the Astros parted with infielder Ty Wiggington. The Yankees have displayed an interest in Wiggington in the past and would probably be interested him as a utility player. However, Wiggington could probably get a starting job, or at least a back up job where he would play more, rather than signing with the Bombers.

Play by the Rules
The Yankees got their pockets picked in Friday's Rule V Draft. Reegie Corona (Sea), Zach Kroenke (Fla), Jason Jones (Min), and Ivan Nova (SD) were all taken in the major league phase of the draft.

Andres Santos (Pit) and Josue Selenes (Oak) then went in the Triple-A phase to make it 6 Yankees prospects selected. Amazing that some baseball "experts" claim the Yankees don't have good prospects.

Winter Meetings- That's a Wrap

The winter meetings finished up in Las Vegas yesterday with the locals coming out the big winners. We give the Mets the top nod for addressing their bullpen needs by acquiring not one, but two closers. The signing of Francisco Rodriguez is, for now at least, the signing of the off-season. Why you ask?

K-Rod is coming off a record breaking season, where he smashed the single season saves mark. The perfect time to become a free agent. Well that is unless the economy is in the tank. Bingo. K-Rod was hoping for a 5 year deal, worth more per season than Mariano Rivera currently receives ($15 million) from the Yankees.

With offers not reaching the level he was looking for, K-Rod "settled" for a 3 year, $37 million contract. A bargain by today's standards. A win-win for the Mets who needed a big time closer after Billy Wagner went down with an elbow injury during the '08 season. The Mets have their closer for the next 3 years, and, keep this in mind, he's just 26 years old.

The Mets set up situation was in shambles last year. In acquiring J.J. Putz, they not only got a reliever who can close if needed, but they dumped ineffective, whiney, Aaron Heilman in the process. They gave up a lot of players, but not all that much quality, at least none that how will have a big impact any time soon.

The Yankees are the number two winners because they nabbed the biggest prize. It took money and a loophole (an escape clause), but the Yankees got the pitcher they wanted in CC Sabathia. Sabathia is not Johan Santana, but my waiting a year the Yankees didn't have to give up any of their chips to get a top notch left-hander. A big plus is that Sabathia is just 28 years old and has shown tremendous durability.

The Yankees didn't get a deal done with free agent A.J. Burnett, but may be very close according to Joel Sherman and George King of the NY Post. An unidentified Yankee player told the pair that Burnett told him they would soon be teammates and that he (Burnett) really wanted to come to New York.

A 5 year contract worth over $80-$90 million can generate a lot of excitement.

During a Hot Stove addition of Baseball Tonight last evening, Karl Ravech remarked that were no losers, per se, at the meetings, since the off-season still has a long way to go and lot of moves can still be made. He was wrong in one respect- there was one loser and his name is Manny.

Manny being Manny again? Perhaps. Ramirez is "threatening" retirement because he's not finding any offers to his liking. So go ahead and retire. Are owners suddenly supposed to feel bad for you? "NO, we can't let this happen, give him all our millions!!!" Be very wary of signing Manny. Big bat, peanut brain.f

World Champs Reel in Big Fish

Raul Ibanez doesn't get the press that many players do these days, but the free agent has averaged 113 RBI over the last 3 seasons. It's even more impressive considering he's been playing his home games in a pitcher friendly park and hasn't had much protection around him in the lineup.

Ibanez will bring those hitting skills to the National League and the hitter friendly Citizens Bank Ball Park after agreeing to a 3-year, $30 million deal with the reigning world champion Philadelphia Phillies.

The Phillies had a hole to fill in left field after deciding not to retain the services of Pat Burrell. The 36-yr old Ibanez will strengthen the Phils' left-side of the plate and will help out early on with the absence of Chase Utley.

Not so fast with the Mike Cameron to the Yankees deal. The deal is on hold, speculation being it has to do with the $10 million owed Cameron for the '09 season. There is also talk of Bill Hall and Kei Igawa being involved.

Joel Sherman and George King of The Post are reporting that Brian Cashman departed the winter meetings to meet with Andy Pettitte. The Yankees need to figure out if Pettitte is in their plans or not as they weigh how many free agent pitchers to sign.

In case you missed, Derek Jeter will participate in the WBC next spring. Oh, he will be playing for the U.S.. ;)
